A Wonderful Place

I decided it was finally time to get some loops from Splice and do some lofi hiphop on the 404. A problem quickly became apparent, though; hiphop beats feel a little thin. They are, by design, missing something — the rhymes overtop.

Never in 1,000 years am I fit for such a task, so I hit the public domains. I ended up on the NASA Audio Archive (where they keep public archives of, essentially, all space communications!) and imagined a traveller from the future telling us about the life he loved, but seemed unimaginably lonely to us.

I’ve gotten much better re: my unquantized drums, though I still keep the snares 100% locked to keep time. But the rest don’t feel too off too often. These are DMX hits courtesy of Samples from Mars (apropos).

this sounds really cool, great idea of using the nasa audio archive, really spacey hip hop vibes

Samples from Mars has some really good inspiring samples for sure.  Nice laid back head nodder with cool vocal samps.  I could hear someone like MF Doom over this.

I agree: your unquantized drumming sounds good and is getting better.  The entire beat feels great, and the guitars in the background sound amazing.

Also: how weird of a coincidence is it that we both sampled from the NASA audio archive this week? I'm curious what mission(s) this audio comes from, and how much chopping you had to do in order to end up with this dialogue—some of the things he's saying get pretty crazy. tongue

WHA?! That’s crazy! And man, I wish I’d thought to include a (ft. NASA) in the title. Genius!

This was from a Q&A between a school ("Parkside") and the ISS via their ham radio station. I definitely did some chopping, but not as much as you might think. They only had a 16 minute window, and I don't think the transmission was 5/5, so the answers got pretty non-sequiter sometimes. The school in Atlanta, I believe? And I want to say it was in 2012? I should have written it down :'(
