My Imaginary Neighbor

Well well well, look who decided to show up again. You've got some real guts showing your face around these parts, you know?

What did you say before I kicked you out? Oh yeah, I remember: "Why do you have these weird little conversational intros to almost all of your WB submissions? Is this your attempt at comedy?" Reeeeeeal guts. NOW SCRAM!

Okay, now that the weird little intro is over, I can talk about the song, hahahaha...

I worked a few extra hours earlier in the week (and last week), so I was able to get almost the whole day off this past Friday. After using some of that free time to take care of a bunch of little house chores, I cracked out an old keyboard and sat down at my desk to play around with it a little bit. I also had the M8 by my side to "transcribe" things over to it as I found fun little patterns.

I found a basic little back-and-forth arpeggio which sounded super playful and cute, so I used it as the main motif for my song. After that I started to add a few little flourishes here and there, like the high-note "finishing" piano keys. I don't know why, but I'm super proud of those even though they are super duper simple.

I knew I wanted to add a grittier growlier synth sound, so I played around with the M8's internal synths and was able to find something that matched what I was looking for.

Originally, I had also added a plucked harpsichord-sounding synth, but it had two problems: 1) the song was getting a bit crowded; and 2) I later noticed I was basically ripping off the theme song for "My Neighbor Totoro", hahahahaha...

I think the feeling of playfulness and childhood wonder still permeates through the song, so I decided to pay homage to "My Neighbor Totoro" by naming this song "My Imaginary Neighbor".

I also think this song feels a bit march-y, but not as much as many of my other songs. Not something I was trying to do - it just came out that way.

The percussion samples are from the HeXaWe Sliced Proteus kits (download link 1, download link 2, download link 3) and the Piano samples were originally created by Trash80.

As usual, the whole thing was sequenced on the M8. What you're hearing here version rendered straight off of the device.

Hope y'all have a great week!!!!

Hey, seeing what everyone wrote about their music is one of my favorite parts. It's like liner notes for an album smile

This is such a fun piece. Both playful and a march - I can totally see the kids having their own neighborhood parade, with the imaginary friends joining in. Piano is a fun main motif with that delay ping-ponging, and the different elements joining in were all great moods - that gritty synth line was a fun surprise. Listened twice in a row smile

Love it. I agree with Paisley that it's got a parade feel to it.

Unlike the actual Totoro theme, I like how this still has that kind of... melancholic wonder? Like we're all going to collect acorns and go see our mystical forest pals, but without being too saccharine.

Not that Totoro isn't perfect. I used to watch it every single day with my daughter when she was little, and he's chillin on the beach on my arm all the time.

I got this image of a toy piano, snare and bass being played in a massive empty stadium. Maybe they broke in. Maybe no one showed up for the concert. But they had a song to perform and this was it!

Arps are always a good way to get ideas flowing.  The piano def has a sweet playfulness to it that gave me visions of the main character and the imaginary fraind playing drums having a lil jam together.  Nice work!

love this so much, jegasus! the beginning of a joyful adventure  smile
and Totoro is one of my all time faves so i was excited to see you mention it.
ok i'm hitting play again!

keep the intros coming! Love how this develops. It's simple but GOES places. It's got some emotional waves and thats hard to do with few elements like this. Well done!

I love how the song fits like a "happy kid playing" theme, kind of imagining the toys marching in and playing an instrument as they go (which is what I was already imagining based on the title, but that could have gone either way, haha).
