Machine Gun Swing

By jegasus on March 10, 2024 10:12 pm

Hey hey hey, peeps!

This past week was a total wash in terms of Weekly Beats for me. I typically listen to (and comment on) a bunch of submissions, but shitty work stuff sapped almost all of my energy to do so. Hopefully I can get some more time and energy throughout this week to go back and listen to people's Week 9's submissions.

Anyways, enough of the sad stories! Let's get to this week's submission! This song is heavily inspired by Final Fantasy VIII's "Man With a Machine Gun". It popped up in my head while doodling and this fun thing came out! I'm really enjoying the blend of piano + synths, so you can expect to see/hear more things like this in the coming weeks.

I find it kind of strange that I still don't have much of a genre or defining style other than "little repetitive loops with tiny variations". But then again, doesn't that describe, like, 99% of amateur musicians? Hahahahaha.... Anyways, I hope y'all enjoy this swingin' little ditty! It definitely made me want to dance a bit =P

As per usual, this was 100% made in the Dirtywave M8 Tracker. What you're listening is the direct render from the device thrown into Audacity to generate an MP3.

How obvious is it that I have no idea how to mix things? Hahahahaha...

Peace!!!

I don't think it's strange about genre, it's probably tough for most musicians to find "their" sound, if they even want to have one. But anyway, I think this track sounds great - the bass is cool and I like the higher lead piano lines through the song.

Really like the "piano swing"

It kind of reminds me the "honky tonk" pianos from some Lucky Luke anime, it kind of feels like a futuristic version of those saloon fights.

Very fun listen.

The piano line reminds me of Puttin' on the Ritz.  It really captures that piano swing feel and I like the atmosphere you've put it in.  Sorry to hear about the rough work week.  Those are the worst.  Hope it gets better.

This is nice as is! But if you replaced the piano sample with an FM piano, and put some more LinnDrum gated verb oomph to the drums, you'd get a bona fide synthwave banger. The track seems to gravitate that way already!

One detail I enjoy is the comb filter ringing out at the end. I love that timbre.

This is super catchy. Nice work.
I get what you mean about genre. I have been making music with synths for yeeeeaaaars, and can’t put a finger on a genre in particular. I can go from flat out techno to trance to chill wave to trip-hop to industrial to ambient to soundtrack to dub from one track to the next. I have done work with vocalists that has been described as techno, pop, trip-hop, industrial… depends on who and when. I just make music with synths, it’s like I have a really cool set of Legos and I start stacking them together until something takes form and run with it.

genre is something that historically comes after the fact!

you do know how to mix!  this song has various sonic elements that are mixed together!  now whether you like it or not is another story!  but i bet you'll get better at it by week 52 smile

this was fun!

Thanks so much!!! I guess it'll be a while (if ever!) that I find a sound that's distinctly MINE. And I think I'm fine with that, too. In the meanwhile I'm perfectly comfortable being a complete scattershot of "well, let's see what the fuck comes out of this project". When I open up a blank canvas, I rarely hade even the slightest idea of what I want to do. I just start loading up instruments, throw weird notes left and right and see if anything cool starts to emerge.
Anyways, sorry for rambling. Again, thanks for listening!

I haven't seen Lucky Luke, but iclbe definitely heard good things about it! Just hearing that my tune reminded you of its soundtrack is a huge compliment, thank you very much!!!!

Thanks for listening!!! Ooohhh interesting, I'm going to have to try your suggestion out! I often have a really hard time making my percussion sound snappy and oomph-y, I'll try fiddling around with this project to see if I can take it a little beyond where I originally got! Thx for the suggestion!!!

Thank you so much for listening! And I hear you 100%! Even though I'm a super amateur musician, the bit abiut treating things like Lego blocks SUPER resonates with me. That's kind of what I was alluding to in my comment to ddmm64, too. I just try to make stuff almost semi randomly. Most times I don't get anywhere. But sometimes I get lucky and stumble upon something interesting and fun! =P
