Lil' Guy March

By jegasus on May 4, 2024 9:37 pm

Hi there! Looking for some weird music stuff? Well, you've come to the right place!

I first started tinkering with this idea a couple of weeks ago when Hank Green put out a video about how Five Guys is manipulating its consumers. There's a moment in the video, specifically at 3m12s, where Hank says "I'm just a little guy and I would like a little burger for my little guy mouth. And I'm gonna go out to my little car, and when I get in it, instead of going like 'VROOM VROOM' it goes 'WOWOLOLOWOWOLOLO'".

It just struck me as ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS, and I knew I wanted to make a song out of it. This, however, isn't my first rodeo since I've already written a song using a funny-sounding quote from Hank in the past.

Anyways, I sampled the audio clip into my M8 and started experimenting with it, trying to find some musically interesting corners and ended up focusing mostly on the "I'm just a little guy" part of it.

I don't know why, but the way I sequence my drums often ends up sounding like a marching band. In this case, given the sonic characteristics of the rest of the song, it feels like a weirdly sad march through the rain, moving forwards stopping for nothing, just forever at the same constant and slow pace.

I'm super happy with where this landed even though it's tremendously simple and can feel a teeny bit repetitive. I'm particularly happy about the pad-sounding synth that comes in half way through the song.

Also, thank you so very much for the sweet and kind comments on my previous submission. I'm happy to report that this week has indeed been less of a pain! The work stressors were still there, but for some reason, it felt less draining. So win!!! Hahahahaha...

Catch y'all on the flip side!!!

Yeah, those are funny samples on the vocals. Also when the percussion came it reminded me of the first few bars on the Maniac Mansion theme. Then I went and listened to it and it's kinda different lol. Anyway nice work!

。:゚゚(´∀`)・。 ... and now I'm dead... That is hilarious, both in AND out of context.  I really enjoy the rhythm parts here... and it's funny, it does have a marching band feel to it... but I wouldn't have noticed that had you not mentioned it... and it's actually a cool vibe.  Like one of the best things any track can have going for it is "this is really familiar to me, but I don't know why"... and I think the drums on this track for sure have that energy.  Fun Track.

ha - that was great AND funny! nice work
i don't know where it originated, but i'm thinking he might be referencing that Portlandia sketch where F.Armisen plays a character called Garmen  big_smile

Match of the little guys. I think it's a march because you add paradiddles.

Haha, fantastic. big_smile Brings some much needed levity to the week!

Haha nice work with that sample! Did you end up getting it cleared? I thought for a second that was Fred Armisen in portlandia. I like the synth pads too!

The sample is funny and it's interesting to see how repetition can make spoken bits start to sound catchy.

I would love a little burger too!  I just had one as a matter of fact.   Samples are hilarious and that harpsichord like instrument is really cool!

Even though I've played maniac mansion 2 Day of the Tentacle multiple times over, I had actually never played the original before! I just listened to the intro song and I think I know where you're coming from. Especially the first 5 or 10 seconds, it has a really similar feel.
Thanks for listening!!!

I actually didn't know what paradiddles was until googlong it just a moment ago, hahahaha... But yeah, that's likely what gave it such a strong "march-y" feel. Thanks for listening!!!

Sadly no, I was ignored on Twitter and the other avenues I tried reaching out through... I think that means this song will eventually get pulled from WB sad Hopefully the admins allow it to stick around at least until the end of the year so I can see the full set of "completed" weeks. Let's see how it goes!
But thanks for listening!!!
