adrift and untethered

another shot at building the techmo machine.

I think this is a technical step forward, but a musical side step at best. this one evolves on its own significantly more--right down to potentially changing the core melody everything is built around. I've got a few things on my list to increase the groove, but more than anything I think this needs space.

I got super inspired by jam & spoon and one of the things that immediately struck me with a lot of their tunes is how full everything seems while still being pretty sparse at times.

the audio is from gemini 8. short version, first attempted docking with another space craft does not go well, and they just tumble end over end. neil armstrong and david scott are ice cold discussing and then fixing this nightmare, and it felt like a good backdrop.

thanks for listening

one of my fav Jam & Spoon tracks of all time is "follow me," so I was excited seeing it in the description and you deliver!

i'm in a room surrounded by all sorts of technology late at night. oh and there is a robotic cat that is hungry in need of recharging. clearly the track cuts off when the cat jumps on the multitrack hitting the stop button.

I saw your reply to my comment the other day - I'm hyped I turned you on to Jam & Spoon! They weren't well known outside of Europe at the time, there were a few more pop hits that hit the radio here in the 90s but that was about it. I thus spent exorbitant amounts of money on their CDs in my youth lol.

I think, again, you captured their exploratory spirit here. I particularly like how the percussion evolves, and that bass is SO DEEP I love it. Immediately felt my heart flutter at the start, all the pieces are there.

I agree, more groove and space would be a next step. Percussive mutes - or melodic mutes - might help with the space there. Also, after diving deep into techno all year, you'd be surprised how much structure a simple riser/snare fill and a good ol' 909 crash every 16 bars can add to something like this, even if they're just running on a loop for now.

This is AMAZING VCV work. I am so impressed.
