who is jabber singh?

By Jason Nijjer on December 1, 2024 11:33 pm

Another week of getting some samples from my Dad's old records, most were taken from a soundtrack of a movie I've never seen.  From the dialog and song titles it would appear Jabber Singh is one bad dude.  The dialog translates to the hero asking "who is Jabber Singh?" and then the villain responding in the third person "Jabber Singh is not crazy!"  Huge appreciation for my hip hop heroes who create the most delightful beats finding the wildest samples.  Found it very difficult to find samples that would work together, I recorded and made about 20 to 30 loops from a few records but only ended up using about 5 or 6 of them.  Still a fun process, might try to do one more like this as I still have about another 30 records to go through.

I love how the adventure continues. These old records have such a beautiful warm sound and the weight of history. I love how using records from different cultures may bring different sounds that western ears are less used to, and enrich our musical vocabulary, our sonic palette and palate. I'm looking forwards to more tracks like this.

Great stuff. You are blessed with those records. Keep it going.

hell yes, this sounds so great. but...

i don't know if this is he, but it came up when i did a search and he looks pretty awesome

That’s fantastic, I didn’t know just how great he looked, that is the soundtrack I sampled from, no image of him on the album sleeve

oh nice! at first it kept showing me a fella named Gabbar Singh, but then i saw this one with the same spelling.
sounds like a treasure trove of sounds you've got over there!

Sounds great, nice sample flipping, you got skills! Not easy. Love this result. And much respect to the hip hop heroes who do this too. Makes me wanna go dig through some crates on the quest.

You are my hip hop hero, Jason!!!

This one sounds delightful. Super phat and crunchy beats.. loving this one smile

Ooof love the warm sound of that bass with the snare.  The low bass gave me some Boards of Canada vibes but the beat and samples takes it in different chill direction.  So cool that you have all those records to explore.  On second listen I feel like I could hear some MF Doom or Del on this smile

I wanted to know who Gabber Singh was, so... here goes:

Gabbar Singh is a fictional character and the antagonist of the 1975 Bollywood film Sholay. It was written by the duo Salim–Javed, consisting of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. Played by Amjad Khan, he is depicted in Sholay as a dacoit with an evil laugh much like "El Indio", the robber, from the Western film For a Few Dollars More, who leads a group in looting and plundering the villages in the region of Ramgarh. He has a sadistic personality and insists on killing whenever required to continue his status and to take revenge on his enemies.[1][2][3] The character is considered to be one of the most iconic villains in Indian cinema.

Great Hiphop groove and vibe.

Thanks for the comment, great to know people still listening, listened to your podcast with SQF a few months ago, enjoy hearing your workflow and stories around the music.

Now I had to dig a little deeper into this mystery man.  I also have the vinyl to the Sholay soundtrack and yes in Indian movie history Gabber Singh is a legend.  This is in fact Jabber Singh, I believe a b-movie rip off of Gabber Singh, but of course just as devious.
Look forward to hearing your music in 2026!
