garam masala

By Jason Nijjer on November 10, 2024 5:51 am

This week brought back many memories of my childhood, all sounds used this week were sampled from my Dad's records from the 60's and 70's from India that he would play when I was a kid.  I didn't want to use any tabla's or dhol's so had to really search for some kick, snare and hihats to find in the records.  Time consuming to find the samples and then try and clean them up and fit together, but amazing how some of the songs I probably haven't heard in 40 years but they immediately brought back memories.

Hope everyone has a great week, kids are on fall break this week so heading to the mountains.  Special time of year, base of the mountain will go mountain biking, then head further up the mountain to go snowboarding the next day.

So nice! I think you found a treasure to sample of. I am looking forward to hear more of your 60-70ies Indian records. I only have a few persian LPs from my father, but I should check them out too.

this is so great, Jason. really nice work, and such amazing source material.
hope the time in the mountains is restorative for you and the fam

So cool that you were able to sample all those nostalgic records.  Love when the beat kicks in with the vocal melody.  I could hear MF Doom or Del on this smile  Hope the mountain trip is fun!

This is another of those brilliant compositions that is so confident and self-aware of what it wants to be that it will just seamlessly melt into the background while I'm listening and just "be there" and I accept it for what it is and know what it's going to be and that.... that is a massive accomplishment. This is really stellar.

Dig it. Tasty. As flavorful as the spice its named after. Great sample discovery and flipping. So nice to grab samples and have a theme, goal, feeling meaning and plan in mind!
I was just visiting my dad last weekend, he cooked a veggie curry dish for dinner and was disappointed that he was out of garamasala to add to it. He would have liked this track, he likes a good beat, which I appreciate in a guy in his late 70's.

Oh i love the backstory. This makes this track so much more special, as it pulls from your childhood and your connection with your family. That is a work of love and it must have been a very satisfying experiment. I love the sound of these records too, with a slight lo fi sound. The treatment really enhances the experience. The singings are beautiful and transport us to a different place. Favoriting this one, it needs more exploration.
