Cruise

By Janky Jams on February 1, 2026 2:04 pm

Real quickie this week, not super happy with it.

"Cruise" because the tempo feels right for a drive time track, and because it came together in only a few hours almost on autopilot - like being on cruise control.

Note to self: I mixed the kick way too loud again, I need to learn to let the rest of the mix breathe...

Patch notes! Voices in order of appearance:
- Schlappi Three Body through a spring reverb, later crossfaded to with a one octave lower E370 wavetable voice through Xaoc Belgrad as the mostly monitone through-line sequence
- Sdkc Helical through Xaoc Zagrzeb for the plinking harmonic textures
- Knobula Monumatic through Bastl Ikarie for the rising chord stabs
- Incus Iteritas Alia through Befaco Pony VCF as the bass
Drums are the usual combination of WMD modules and the Ohmforce Bohm

I did some mixing/mastering tweaks in post, so the external links below have a slightly different mix version of this track:

Hey JankyJams, I'm with you that the kick is too loud. It's so easy to go overboard with. Especially when jamming, as it gives such a vibe. And you get used to it so quickly.

As I recall, you're now doing multi track recording. Maybe try setting your final mix with a temporary highpass at 85Hz. Get used to your mix without the deep bass. Then take off the high pass filter and blend in the kick to taste. You're less likely to over do the kick level that way. When you let it go full range all the time it's so easy to become 'blind' to how loud it really is.

That's a cool trick! I normally just take a break before my final mixdown to reset my ears but I'm not expert, I'll try this next week.

For a no thoughts jam this is pretty impressive. It's got progressions, sections, rich sounds and a nice groove.

It's not perfect, it's a workaround. Nothing beats a proper listening environment. And indeed, time away so you can hear your mix with fresh ears. But it's better than nothing.

Nice idea! I definitely need to look at calibrating my studio monitor setup a bit better, and just generally not be afraid to pull back the kick. Just like, there's a difference between kicks when making basement bunker techno and when making more normal music people listen to at home.
Taking it as a lesson for the next one! Thanks a lot for your suggestions smile

Me too, but this one had to come together in only a few hours because I had no time for anything else this weekend 🥲

Thanks heart

I mean, personally I love how massive your kick always sounds, but I could see it maybe being a little quieter. Love the vibe of this track - has a more chill vibe but with the kid of energy your tracks always bring. Great stuff, always amazed at what you do with modular.
