Star Machine

By Jai Cafarella on January 26, 2020 2:00 am

This is my little jab at the 'suit' side of music; the people up the top that don't actually create music themselves, but seem to hold all the cards and benefit the most from others (Spotify, anyone?). Sharing music to a wider audience as an independent artist is near impossible, even with all social medias, because many are largely influenced by the mass marketing and promotion power of the big labels and radio stations. Plenty of great music gets ignored because the suits don't see them bringing in the billions. I do understand the business side is necessary, I just feel there is a significant imbalance in who's in control, who gets a shot and who gets paid. Music Business: too much business, not enough music...

Pardon the rant... =oP

Once again, cheers to Nyarlos for glossing up my mix with some mastering =o)

Lyrics:

Step right up and I will make you a star
I like your style, but let me change who you are
You'll be lost in a dream as I slowly break you down
When I'm done, you won't even know your sound

Welcome to the star machine
Are you ready to see your dreams come true
I'm doing this for you
Once you sign, your life is mine
Are you ready to cash your cheques through me
I'll take it all in fees

I will mold your soul that you just sold
I own your rights, so do what you're told
I will bait you along until you give in to your shame
'Cause exploitation is the name of my game

Stuck inside the star machine
I've already nightmared all your dreams
No one will intervene
You can't resign, your life is mine
Don't forget it, you signed it all away
And every day you'll pay

Thank you for your sacrifice
We're done here, your worth expired
Crashing down, you're falling
I'll move on to the next in line
Don't cry you had quite a run
You can't deny the ride was fun
Don't hold your breath for your royalties
In our deal you signed them to me

Farewell from the star machine
I've show you the faster dreams are made
The sooner they will fade

It sort of makes sense if you factor in the normie crowd that ultimately consumes the music. It doesn't have time to go through the entire indie scene to find the thing they like most, so they'll settle for second or thirtieth best.

That's why I love WeeklyBeats, it's not the entire indie scene, but it's a part of it, a very wide net of many influences, with people who know people and the weekly format makes everyone expose their truest self.

Great song though, love the vocals with the guitars.

Catchy tune Jai. Drums were a bit 'heavy' sounding for my taste, would have preferred something a bit less aggressive sounding but the song is killer.
