Sale! Sale! (Buy Until We Die)

By Jai Cafarella on September 15, 2024 7:17 pm

This is a bit random; Shortly after I got home from work last night, I had this kind've punk-esque vocal idea in my head (verse melody) so I picked up the guitar to find something that worked with it, then came up with the cheesy not-very-punk chorus, recorded the idea on the phone and left it at that.

Today I thought I'll try writing some lyrics, but if that doesn't flow I'll do a different song. I tried a few different subjects but couldn't get anything to fit, so I was going to give up on it until I thought 'buy until we die', and then the capitalism lyrics started to flow.

I'm not really sure if this song works stylistically, like, I can already hear oddities in the music and lyrics that maybe I would've done differently with more time, but it is what it is, a demo of something that might be built on later *shrug*

I got a bit over ambitious with some of the Jaideas for a 'punk song' so it ended up sounding typically me (whatever that is) and very not punk *facepalm* Oh well... hmm

Every day there's new shit out
Buy it now or you'll miss out
It's a lie, it's a lie, and we're more than willing to

Pay to feel that dopamine
Before the real life intervenes
We're stuck in this machine
It's a lie, it's a lie, but we're more than willing to
Spend our lives away

We're more than willing to
Buy until we die
In our capitalist life
Spending til we feel alright
It's a lie
And we're more than willing to

Live in the debt than live without
Consumerism roundabout
We justify it with discounts
It's a lie, it's a lie, and we're more than willing to

Chase the sales as we chase our tails
We can see the patterns but it makes life matter
As we spend our life away

We're more than willing to
Buy until we die
In our capitalist life
Spending til we feel alright
It's a lie
And we're more than willing to

I really like the vocal performance there!

Nice heavy guitars sound.

Drum programming is very nice, for the style I'd love acoustic drums. smile

I want to go buy shit now that I listened to your track! wink

Haha damn man this is good.

Nailed the topic and I really like a lot of the lyrics, I think you really captured something here and made a good one on this capitalist theme.

Nice use of space in the verses to break it up and keep it interesting.

The bridge with sped up sales vocals was a brilliant touch, didn’t see it coming but worked so well in a parody way and very punk ethos. Definitely was familiar! And the ‘that’s how they get you’ was a cool line coming in.

I got an almost grungy alt rock vibe from this, maybe like smashing pumpkins?

Either way, enjoyed this, great job! 👏
