I started this track on week 11, since I haven't slept last night, I decided to finish it up so I can get a few hours in before the Aphex Twin Syro listening tonight. This track was made entirely from a sample I recorded -I'm only just now realizing- 10 years ago. I have used it a extensively to add some background textures in random songs, but now it is it's own song. I uploaded it above so now you can use it too.

Feeling some Warp influences here... Are you getting in the Richard D James state of mind already? Hope you enjoy the new album... After 13 years I don't know exactly what to expect.

Great work, by the way. All those textures coming from just one sample... Even drums?... Amazing smile

I can't believe ur going to that! I put my name down for the London show but got nothing back from em yet...

what a vibe... loving ur deep kick up in here... and those subtle arps and bells creeping in there...

how you made this from that record noise I have no idea...

oh... its building :0 .... subtle drop... flexin'....

(head nodding... bass face poppin....)

oh....

...riddim....

riddim!.. yuh..

Another good one! In fact, they keep getting better… Faved & saved.

Syro, heard the album -- couple of really nice tracks & a mind-blowing equipment chart :-)

Haha! Yeah, I started this track a while ago, so it wasn't that influenced, not as much as last weeks! The new AT album was good, although I wouldn't set your expectations too high, especially if you want it to be completely insane and new. This would be a good album to hear a few more times and pick up on the more subtle elements. It wasn't as cohesive as his other albums, which leads me to wonder if it is a random collection from his older unreleased work. But overall, any new AT is good!

ALL of these sounds originated from the source sample, with some or a bit of processing etc. The drums where made by my ICOM compliant drum synth which was made explicitly for this purpose using the source sample for the oscillations and noise. There was a couple of lead instruments that I re-sampled using an additive synth (Harmor). I personally feel like additive synthesis is almost like cheating, so I kept the manipulation as simple and minimal as possible and still creating tones that were somewhat listenable, which is why this track is much more understated than usual.
You should try to do an ICOM some time! It's a lot of fun!

Yeah, I guess I lucked out! Glad you like the track. 10 years of ICOM is how I learned how to get sounds out of anything!

Haha! That's funny you say that because I feel like I peaked in the first 10 weeks, and have been going down hill since! Maybe I'm just being to hard on myself! Where did you hear the album? I know there are a few fakes on youtube, etc. There are a couple of gems in there for sure. There was one that was kind of jazzy which I really liked hearing his take on that style. I heard about that chart, I need to look it up!

Lucky about seeing AT... nah m8 ur stuff is definitely getting better

You totally had me with the "all made out of 1 sample"-thing, because i love those experiments. Mind-blowing, what and how you achieved it!!!! Really love your style.
(Btw i think you're on a constant exceptional high level since the beginng of wb, no going down at all, from my point of view) Cheers!

I second that! Jealous about the Syro listen, too. You need to release an album of this stuff on vinyl for reals

Honestly, the entire time I was wishing I could have been at home listening to it on my system. A lot of the mid-range was gone on the PA, the low end was over extended and muddy and it was mostly lights out except they would occasionally flash some strobes in your face which was annoying as hell since your pupils are dilated. There was an Aphex logo projected by laser on a wall sometimes, but it wasn't even the correct aspect ratio. There was no merch or even stickers or anything (I would love a shirt, and die for an umbrella). Just a lot of sweaty dudes. Overall, you will have a better experience listening it at home on decent monitors or headphones!

I think you would be great at ICOM! I love me some synths, but sample manipulation is always going to lead to weirder sounds! Thanks for that complement, your stuff has been on point as well!

OMG I would love to do a vinyl release.... if only people would buy it. I don't want a few crates of unsold records in my apt. =p

This is wonderful! Even more impressive that it was created out of a single sample.

Thanks!

Very singular sound aesthetic!

such a shame about the Apehx show... but still... u got to hear it ahead of the rest of the world... I'm still waiting in curious excitement....

I had a look at the ICOM and have no idea how to make heads or tail of it... U have 1 sample and have to sound design from that 1 source to get a whole track? Is that it?  ... and u have been doing that consistently for 10 years??? holy moly! :0

I wouldn't say it was a bad listening, but it's hard not to have extremely high expectations after 13 years!
Yup, ICOM is fun, and really helped me as a producer. Sure a lot of tracks aren't going to be amazing, but it forces you to create sounds and write quickly which is surprisingly refreshing. We started about 10 years ago, but it is on and off. There was a period where we were doing it bi monthly and actually get a crowd of people to watch. This year my brain has been focused on WB, so we haven't chefed much. But maybe we can do one a few hours before WB deadlines for the last minute people!

amazing story behind the track, and very nice work musically. i can see the AT references and the differences. poor guy, that was a lot of hype to live up to!

I wouldn't say poor guy, I think he will do pretty well, and I've heard rumors that there will be more releases soon which would be more than welcome. There is a lot of good stuff in the album too, I kind of feel like he is testing out the waters a bit seeing what responds well with today's audience. And most of the hype is in people's own expectations. I don't think his hype machine was as ridiculous as Daft Punks last album, and even more obscure than BOC's last album. And really Richard is a producer of several styles, so it's understandable this album might not be what every fan is expecting. That being said, I hope he kicks it up a notch with the next one!

lovin the vinyl gif btw

Yeah I guess I didn't really mean poor guy in the sense that I think he'll be lacking... I'm just thinking he used to really shock people with his music, and now most of his work is much more in the mainstream. He may not care. But I think as an artist it must be tricky to try to stay one persona (AT) in a electronic music scene that is shifting so much and so quickly... any who. Rambling. Cheers!

The first one is from Amélie . The other 2 are just random giphy gifs.

Yeah, I think weird electronic is more mainstream these days thanks to the huge market push for EDM. But I'm pretty sure he doesn't give a care what other people think of his music. I definitely agree about how difficult it is for a producer to do different styles due to fan expectations, that's part of the reason I haven't put out anything other than singles. Not that anyone is really listening!

Lovely sounds, lovely music. This is a massive track. Well done.

This track got a much better response than I ever would have expected. Personally I panned on it 25 weeks ago and probably wouldn't have revisited it if I wasn't in a tight spot! Thanks!

This is really impressive. Very nice sounds.

There is going to be an ICOM sample dropping at the end of the week if you guys are interested in trying.
Its a lot of fun, and a good way to get your WB done if you procrastinated all week! Make sure to sign up first!

Very subdued and chill. Brilliant track

amazingly played! - its great when a track is built from a stem like that and turns out to be some good quality track work!

P.S, This needs to be pressed to vinyl ! (just for aesthetics wink

this was an awesome track, love the tape feel it had early on and the glitch at the end is insane!  as far as Aphex, I actually fell in love from the first listen.  I think it's because i'm desperately seeking melodic stuff to like and for him i think this album was overall pretty melodic.  The first few tracks kinda reminded me of Plaid's Double Figure album.  Track 6 is pretty bad ass too.  It's definitely an album I think that benefits from multiple listens.  I just hope he goes on a streak of releasing not music and not another 13 year absence.  He probably could have released an album of farts sampled into pads and i would have liked it smile  go RDJ!

man that's a masterful ending
