Is this a Jungle?

By ineff on May 15, 2022 10:48 pm

In the mid 90s, I heard a report on public radio about a new kind of "underground" music becoming popular in the UK.   It was played at incredibly fast tempos―almost 170 bpm(!), and for some reason it was called "jungle."  The reporter explained that most people danced to it at half-speed, interviewed some slightly annoyed UK clubbers they'd waylaid outside an event, and played a clip.

It felt like alien music, dipping into atonality and a complex energy that felt frenetic and calm at the same time.  To my ears, jungle was almost too primal/sophisticated for words―and it was fun.  It would be years before I had a chance to hear anything like it again.

100% made and mixed on a Dirtywave M8 Tracker.

I do wonder where genres get their names sometimes.  And it is kind of interesting how a super fast beat somehow becomes calm in a way.  Really cool track.

this is fantastic - love all the tiny details here and there - favorited

swinging from vine to vine.

This is siiiiick and I love it. Going to HYU on Discord.

I looooved Jungle music back in the 90s. There is something about these crazy breaks, the energy of the beats that the brain does not really understand and the other layers that let you travel. It's like music powered hypnosis. Very nice work capturing this whole vibe with this track.

How do you build drum patterns like this? It's beyond me, but sooo good! Great low wave bass notes. Sweet!

you did an awesome job on the m8. This has the original energy.

Love it! All of the detail sounds and that beat. I heard that chippy part at 35s wink
