Deeper Waves

Inspired to orchestrate with synthesizers by laamaa's incredible week 15 track, Out of Time―and ironically, ran out of time (nailed it! tongue).  All instruments except for percussion were made from scratch using the built-in synths.

Building the intro taught me a lot about the M8's envelope FX, and I liked the ambience of the first 16–24 bars.  But I had to wrestle to keep that tone over the rest of the track―there were so many this-would-technically-work-but-isn't-where-this-song-feels-like-it-should-go directions the next few bars always wanted to go at any given moment.  I think the end result stays within the fence posts, although it somehow ended up in G# minor (the struggle was that hard).

I also made another, more developed version of this track: It's 00:32 longer and has tighter expression, lovely transitions (timpani rolls!), and more movement & harmony later in the chorus.  But somehow, something got lost when the chorus hits―the lead "horn" is just a tic or two brighter than the initial sketch, and the lead "violin" no longer keeps your attention!  I spent ages troubleshooting what happened and how to fix it―side by side, those few bars are virtually identical―but there is a world of difference in the impact.  Eventually, I ran out of time and had to post.  Still no idea what happened; maybe it's one of those psychoacoustic effects, like week 7. hmm

So: this track is one of those earlier versions―it's shorter and rougher, but still feels on-target.

It does have a nice full sound like a symphony of synths.  Bummer about the issues with the more developed version.  Technical mishaps are the worst and I hate wasting time trying to figure out why something weird happened.  Maybe you can revisit it at a later date?

So much orchestral output from this tiny machine. I do not understand how you control and operate this with only 8 buttons. The sound and vibe is brilliant that you captured here. I remember well the laamaa song you mentioned and you did a nice equivalent opus.

Felt like I was floating through space! Well orchestrated!

Well, it's still very amazing, and maybe you can figure out how to finish it later, or maybe even better, make a sequel.

I thought this sounded pretty epic. Like the prelude to a big battle or something. Very cinematic in it's feel. Nice work!

I had to try to remember what laamaa's track was but the moment I heard that hyperlight drifter vibe again I was like "Oh yeah" haha. I think this is a nice companion piece to what he had too, we could always use more of those apocalyptic, atmospheric synths! Now I want to know how to recreate that sound so I can put it in my music one week too. Just a continuous cascade of hyperlight drifter influences throughout the weeklybeats community haha.

Synthwork is spectacular in this. Absolutely lovely sound. What's the sound at 2:18-2:19 -- is that a sample-tail + a synth working like magic?
