i admit defeat

By iHz on April 10, 2022 7:26 pm

My battle with depression has been rough and I really struggled to get a track together this week. I've got A BUNCH of tracks in progress right now but I'm kinda stuck on all of them. This track actually came to me yesterday. I decided to try to tap into some of the depression to make a track and this is what I came up with. It was originally titled "Can't Get Ahead" but I ultimately went with "i admit defeat".

I don't think I would consider this track "done" but I like where it's at right now. I might revisit it later. Hope you enjoy!

Also, I'm so sorry to everyone for not getting a chance to listen to the week 13 submissions yet. I'll get caught up this week I hope!

Whatever was defeated, your lyrical melodies didn't give an inch.  They're always phrased so naturally that they can come across like slighty-blurry words―I actually got distracted tonight and caught myself listening more carefully, trying (at some level) to make them out.  This isn't the first week that's happened, but it seems like the the iHz signature move―like the melodies that feel familiar, like I knew them well a long time ago but just can't place right now (and never will).  And the solo in the middle was first-class.

Me, too.  I try to limit the number of unfinished project I have at one time, but they certainly got away from me this week.  Judging by the comments in various people's tracks, we're not the only people who felt that way this week.   I'm not surprised Q2 feels more difficult than Q1, but I didn't expect it to kick in immediately.

This track came on and grabbed me. I really dig it. The counterpoint between melody and bass is so… friendly. Sorry to hear about your struggle. I hope things improve for you.

Incredible disco vibe! This is straight pop joy right here - thank you!

I really like the vibe -- "disco vibe" comment gets it 100%. Absolutely love the minimal instrumentation & articulation / detailed perfectionism of your work. heart

Yikes, I don't like the implication the first week troubles are going to last through the quarter. Creatively, at least, I feel it's pretty much guaranteed to get easier because it always does: some tunes happen spontaneously, others require hella labor. (And it's almost frustrating how often the spontaneous ones turn out way better than the laborious ones!)

ooh that bassline and melody are so good!!   The highpass fade in hits just right as the bass wraps around my ears.   I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling with depression at the moment.   The fact that you were able to create this chunk of awesomeness despite battling bad thoughts and feelings is something you should be very proud of.  It's not easy to tap into that darkness and draw creativity from it, let alone complete a whole song in a week.   If you ask me, that is a victory, even if it doesn't feel like one.   Cheers and I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you so much! I usually have some lyrics in mind while I'm coming up with the melodies. They're not... "good" lyrics lol. I've actually been planning on learning to write poetry with the goal of having it help with lyric writing. Maybe one day I'll have time haha.

Thank you very much! I love writing funky basslines like this! smile

Thank you! I've always loved a lot of classic disco so it definitely has an influence on a lot of my stuff.

Thank you! I'm sorry to hear that you had a rough week too. Glad the news from your doc was positive though! I struggle with nutrition and it absolutely has an impact on my mood and mental health. The problem is, when I'm struggling with mental health, I reach out for the bad foods that are only going to make it worse - vicious cycle haha. All that being said, I'm in a much better place this week. I wouldn't say that the depression is necessarily better but I think I'm just getting better at riding it out and not leaning into it if that makes sense. I hope this week has been better for you as well!

I think I'm going to have to stop making new tracks for a bit until I get this under control LOL. I also feel like a lot of my "less laborious" tracks are some of my best tracks. Super strange how creativity works.

Thank you so much! You're absolutely right - this is a victory. Thank you for those words of encouragement & well wishes! smile

You have such a strong sense of melody, I really like that about your work. The rhythms in this one are really groovy. I like this track a lot! I think it was a great success.

Love the title and the truth in the backstory. The track screams of victory! Love the solid bass groove and 8bit bubbles. Also the sweeping filter effects are well done and lift the track in spots. Event that sweet filter in the outro fade (if I'm hearing correctly), is a fine attention detail.

Thank you! I love it when that high pass filter gives it a kind of "cassette player" sound. That was one of my favorite parts of this track

It's really great as it is, any change to it can just be put after it as an extension for extra groove
