Welcome To Babylon

By horatiuromantic on April 3, 2022 11:58 pm

This week comes a reggae/dub track recorded with my dear friend Tommaso Richelmy on guitar, and me on piano, at a little rehearsal place in Copenhagen.

We recorded on my google pixel phone *yikes* and I chopped up the parts that were the least wacko and put them together with some dub style drum samples from the internet. I used the M8. I had more ideas for the track but I spent so long figuring out how to make it sound at least 1% dub-reggae-ish that I didn't have time for all my ideas. But here it is, a sweet little track to be enjoyed on the end of the first season of weeklybeats 2022 big_smile YAY!

I wonder if anyone has some tips for what kind of tools can be used to achieve those classic delay/reverb/wack sounds that go in reggae/dub (not even sure this is the right name for the genre but u know what I mean). So far it was kind of a pain to do on the M8, and I considered doing it on the ipad where I have some effects that can be performed - a tapey looper thing, some reverbs/delays, and basically I was thinking to put the beat there and while it's playing I just mess with it, but yeah - no time smile

Oh yea - last part is a small part of an unfinished composition by Tommy that we need to record together at some point! I thought it fits here to end the track on it with my voiceover.

This was really fun. I had a smile on my face through the entire track. I actually thought the room recording on the phone added a lot of character to the track that would have been lost if it had been more "professionally" recorded. When I think of dub sounds, my mind goes straight to spring reverb, tape delay, and filter sweeps. I don't know of any specific plugins to go for, but Benidub makes really great effect pedals perfect for that kind of thing. You could probably glean some inspiration from looking at how they piece together the different components in their pedals and try to recreate some of the ideas.

I think the piano needs a tuning, but it's a nice feeling groove.

this is so much fun. many good vibes to be had.

I know you're looking for suggestions about the reverb/delays but what I'm hearing on the crash (and the rest of the drums?) seems to be sounding good.

900% DYNAMITE. This is such an orginal rocksteady ska dub reaggaeroots track I had to freak out. Love the recording and rehearsal vibe. very good vibes. thanks for this link.

Nails the reggae feel and I agree the casual rehearsal feel adds to the charm.

Need to go to bed so no time for details, but I just wanted to say I really liked this track.

Great suggestion at 01:04. tongue

Heh read this right as I got to that bit. Worked out.

Fun little track. I can’t Imagine trying to work a track from rehearsal room back into studio like that via phone recording. Hats off!

Thanks so much! Glad you appreciate the dubious recording quality tongue I wasn't happy with it almost up until the submission but listening more and more it sort of started to speak to me, and now I am glad I did it because the track saves these great moments.

Thanks for the rec on the dub pedals. Looks solid!

Thanks! yea, the tuning is off and I even went further detuning some stuff while assembling it on the M8. It's not such a bad thing that some things sometimes are not perfectly in tune. who needs perfection in today's world eh.

The samples came with a bunch of effects already so that's why some of them sound good. It's almost all from musicradar and free hehe.

Thanks all! I guess it just shows that we should trust more in our process and make stuff even with less than perfect setups. for example I do now have a great setup for recording at home but still a decent vibe can be made with just a phone and nice instruments + good friends big_smile

That's a super hip track. It reminds me of a reggae track in a smoky, dimly lit bar. Like Tom Waits doing reggae. I love the fact that we're in the rehearsal space with you guys, capturing the comments and arrangements on the fly. Super cool.

Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! We had fun, and I'm glad I captured that moment smile

Pleasing reggae sounds, you did really well with the phone recordings. A playful arrangement, and the spoken parts fit in well. Nice one.

The musicradar sample library is an amazing treasure trove. I've been using it for years and it never ceases to impress me.

When that piano came in....automatic stank face
Amazing stuff
