Love is a wee beastie

By horatiuromantic on February 15, 2026 11:54 pm

I made this crazy banger of a song in two days! Yesterday I came up with the bassline and groove, and today I made the drums with the help of Levi the drummer, plus my hand-made fills and kick drum pattern, and some other tricks. I had to tell Levi to not play the kick, and I played it separately on a track. This way, it was in line with the bass, and thus more funky and tight.

The bass is a fake moog, and the piano, clavi and strings are from the Korg SV-2S and my vocals, as you can see in the video. I wrote the lyrics inspired by Valentines day (I was home alone but it was nice) and some sci-fi I've been reading, where nanometer-sized robots were called "wee beasties". Love that expression!

By the way, this morning I realized that I subconsciously ripped off the beautiful song Dear Limmetz by Azymuth, but since there are only so many basslines, I decided it's probably fine. The chords and melody are not the same, and they don't have lyrics anyway. I can recommend it, it's an incredible song!

About the process: I wanted to compose something more jovial again, and do my thing where I improvise lyrics. But still I wanted to continue playing bass and keys at the same time, maybe also singing - this was not possible. I cannot play this song yet with all 3 instruments ahhah. So I did a bass take, a keys take, and a vocal take. But at least those are one-takes! And I think it will be possible someday once I practice more!

This song was also inspired by lots of japanese 70s and 80s funk pop, which I am so in love with for quite a few years. Check out Jiro Inagaki, Hiroshi Sato and more if you need recommendations.

YOOOOOO i might have to record this drum beat and bass line live, on a loop for you to play too

and i haven't forgotten [secret thing]

great video!

Love the title, and the song is gorgeous.

Some of those EP runs!

Mmmm! So good!

Those BVs are also lovely!

"Bums out the window!" Haha this is awesome, man.

Your music feels like a smile. Haha and that's what it put on my face today!

Are you quite sure you're describing love and not some kind of viral disease.

I love it! love the backing vocals and the strings when they come in!! the rest is of course fabulous too!!

About love, I love the bass line. smile

Fun track.

Lovely backing ladies. Lovely string section rolling alongisde talk about love predators.

Really groovy!  Love that "call and response" approach to your clav and rhodes parts.  Well done!

Incredible work! The moment when the chorus hits is fantastic.

Any song that includes the words cacophonous and beasties is an automatic legend.

This was fantastic. The keys in particular murdered me at least a half dozen times, and those strings! Amazing.

Groovin. I appreciate a more full production than can be played all at once. Esp like the wah bits going on.

This such lighthearted fun. Lyrics and delivery made me chuckle! So many good lines haha
Sweet keys playing as always, lovely crunchy chords and that funky funky bass.

What a fun song, really enjoyable to listen to

The bass line is so funky I dig it man. Canโ€™t go wrong with extra funk.

Fun lyrical content and rhythms which complement the music while also carrying it along the journey!

this is so fun and funky heart love what u got going on here ๐ŸŒท๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒน

Ooooh dang the funk in this be dripping! Awesome fills on especially right when you said cacophonous! The bass is such a hook to, guiding the track forward.  Ooh yes love the strings. Super fun track \m/

Combines two of my favorite things: comically misunderstanding something, and putting serious effort into silly ideas. Love the clav, love the backing vocals, and the song made me laugh multiple times. And it's a spot-on 70s soul/funk groove, which is doubly impressive when it's all overdubs and not a full band feeling it live. Nice work!

Thanks! Go for it, it's a sick line! As written in the descr, it's really kind of picked up subconsciously from the Azymuth track, so if you dare to, make sure to slap it!

Thank you, thank you!

It's mad, it really came together well, as most songs this year, for the longest time I didn't have it, but then in the last minute I found something where I knew "this is it!" - that was the "wee beasties" thing in this case... and I guess a bunch of other stuff I can't even remember. Glad I could make you smile!

Thanks! Yeahhh I knew you would like it big_smile those additions were quite late in the process but they did bring it all together very well.

Oh yea. It was more of a cheat for sure, I recorded it off camera too smile it's so funky I can't really do it at the same time as piano and lyrics. But I knew what I was going for and I'm glad I went this route.

YEAA That predators section is kinda funny innit big_smile

I also love the strings part! those changes are so satisfying, I kinda wish I put the chorus in twice, but then it would be just a little less special.

Thanks!!! It was a bit last minute, I think the clav was just before backing vocals in the last hour before the deadline. Pretty happy with it! I was thinking that during the strings section the clav becomes kind of like an orchestral harp hahah

Yeaaaa thanks! It does feel really special that Dmaj79 and strings.

Hahha thank you! I have been reading a lot of words lately, it must be good for me!

Thank you! I am all about playing these days rather than producing, but it's super nice to get a fuller sound. And singing without having to do other crap is so liberating! Altho I don't know if I could ever be purely a singer.

Thank you! The bass is super important.

Thank you! I agree big_smile I think the bass groove alone is enough to keep me hooked for a long time.

Thank you! I once put too much funk, I broke it! But I fixed it again, and since then I'm extra careful! Nah jk there is no such thing as too much funk!

Thank you! yesss the story / journey is very important, but in case you don't hear it or don't care enough there has to be a nice groove, I find.

THANK YOU! Yes, I'm very serious when it comes to the sillyness in my music - people never seem to see it coming! One day I will have a funky live band playing this kinda shit, just u watch!

This is wild.  The guts.

very smooth

I love all of the different types of music represented in Weeklybeats, but I'm definitely glad you're here keeping sexy shredding locked down heart

I'd say that love isn't a virus, but hate definitely could be.

Thanks!!! You can tell I've been looking inwards ehh

Peak Horatiu. Love how you're leaning into your leisure suit '70s persona. It really works for ya, and the backing vocal choirs are just the cherry on the cake here.

Horatiu, honestly the premise of these lyrics is a stroke of genius. Great to hear you doing more of the spoken word thing. Please more!
