Afrobeat

Afrobeat! A groovy beat where two crazy improvisers (me) battle it out on Melodica and Electric Piano (by neo soul keys).

Made with the M8 (hacked on tweensie controlled with a PS4 controller). I used some free samples found online to cut up a funky beat with percussion and bass, added some funky wah guitar and created 3 sections. After that I spent way too much time trying to figure out how to fake some horns, then I realized I have a perfectly fine blow instrument at my disposal which is my dear melodica that I just bought weeks ago.

I used a weird setup to hook up my computer to the iPad so the M8 sound went to AUM where I recorded the backing track as it were, then I layered solos on top with piano and melodica. I used GarageBand because I cheat a little bit and punch in at different places, since I couldn't do a full take without screwing stuff up, but I think the end result is pretty good. I over-used compression as I am still learning how to mix and master, and it was a bit rushed in the end so maybe the sound is a bit wack. Nothing glaringly wrong is apparent to me, but I'm interested in your feedback!

Honestly I maybe should have just uploaded a long version of the beat with nothing else, but I am a sucker for some jazz soloing... My neighbors must love me so much ♥ P.S. the melodica is LOUDER than my studio monitors. I think I need to get myself a real studio or move in the forest...

Enjoy!

thanks! it was so fun to listen to the beat alone that I didn't know what to do with it for the longest time. It was fun to play over as well, it def got out of hand a few times (in a good way) and I also lost a couple of good solos because I didn't record properly or the ipad screwed me over (in a bad way).

I'm rediscovering the joys of playing over a simple riff, but slowly learning what it means to put together chords that really complement each other in the progression, like in this one when it goes to the 5 (E) it elevates the first part to a new level of energy to support the soloing. And when it drops to the 4 (D) with the equal bass notes it really feels so satisfying to me, and it only works because it started with the other chords and built up to that point.

Big love for the melodica.

Melodious!

Doooope, the melodica sounds straight up accordionesque around 1:58--2:13, great moment. Also partial to the funk guitar samples, crazy good fit for the tune.

what an extraordinary piece of music. You must have had a lot of effort, to play and record all those elements. The bassline is fantastic, the guitar superfunky, the Rhodes superdelicious, the rhythm straight out of the jungle and the melodica from jazzheaven. Very very good and joyful.

this is super impressive, really cool sounds and feeling. I would have never guessed this was made on the m8, wow!

Melodica is great! I can't afford accordeon now but someday maybe...

but yea u can use melodica in cool ways. I need to try some wahwah and distortion XD so far it was too crap but I'll keep trying

Thank you ♥ M8 for the beat, recording was only piano and melodica, so a bit of cheating with those samples (but they were chopped to hell) but I'm so glad you like it!

That's a great result if you think so big_smile I don't wanna sound like my instrument, I wanna sound like me big_smile but the m8 is really versatile and helpful

Haha, if punching in and comping takes is cheating then I'm the biggest hack there is.  But seriously though, no shame in that to get a good recording in my opinion.  And you're clearly a very talented musician.  Very cool track this week, definitely digging the groove to it.  I love the 2nd part that's really sparse with the bass just chilling on that root note the whole time.  Nice way to change it up.  The mix sounds really good too, doesn't really sound too squashed to me but I tend to go a little heavier on compression myself.  I definitely think the instrumentation you chose helps the overall sound quite a bit too.  Not a lot of instruments clashing for the same space.

Thanks for the feedback and appreciations!

The bass idea for the second part was so clear in my head before I made it, I don't think I've experienced that before. I just knew that it's gonna work as a groove. For the solo tho I know in theory that it can be better - it could be more melodic (lol) in the sense that it could develop certain motifs better and basically be a bit more connected in some kind of story arc. I think that always comes easier when doing fewer and longer takes (if I don't screw it up).

This is so good and fun to listen to, melodica sounds great, the M8 looks so cool, interesting use of devices to make this track

Wow, I almost used melodica a few weeks ago, maybe even when you did this?

this has a real live band feel!  i can imagine a lively bar with open windows and people dancing in the streets

Love afrobeat! Impressed that you captured such a live feel via overdubs -- it really does sound like a live band. The melodica here almost sounds like a bandoneon -- tangobeat?
