PostPunkThief

By HoolieBrown on February 7, 2026 12:44 am

Listening to a lot of postpunkrevival-revival like viagra boys, wet leg, etc and wanted to give this a try.  All recorded into the m8 except for the guitar solo - kept sounding flat so while mixing in Reaper I retracked it through guitar rig pro 7 to make it stand out.

Drums sequenced on m8 and tried to make it as live as possible feeling, took half the tracks to get it right - I spent more time on this than anything else.

Bass is a sample instrument from Kontakt I bounced to a scale for slices in the M8 - I was sleeping on the Scarbee Rickenbacker b/c I usually don't care for rick basses b/c they always have these farty tones - not here.  Crunch.

For anyone interested the guitar was a $100 Donner that Amazon sent a colleague on accident and told him to donate it or keep it.  I don't really have anything with humbuckers in the bridge so it worked out great.  Kept that on bridge position through my main home rig - Orange Crush through King of Tone homebuilt clone from pedalpcb, through a lightly modded Blues Jr with a Celestion greenback - it was up LOUD to get the right amount of saturation for this sound but worth it imo.  Recorded with an MD421Kompakt through a UA 276 as a passthrough directly into the M8

Vocals recorded super quiet, close mic'd through the MD421 with light 1176 comp direct into the m8.

Spent an hour on mix/master in reaper leaning heavily on Ozone, probably should have spent more but it's a busy week.

Thanks to everyone for the amazing words of encouragement in the last couple of weeks - this community is awesome, let's keep it going big_smile

Lyrics:

White light
No sound
Hands shake
Head down
Fight or flight
my crown
I’m gonna take when
no one’s around

You’ll never catch me
You’ll never catch me
You’ll never catch me
I’m just too fast

I’m gonna take when
no one’s around

New car
New clothes
Your streets
My home
Big dreams
Big town
I’m gonna take it
it’s gonna be known

You’ll never catch me
You’ll never catch me
You’ll never catch me
I’m just too good

I’m gonna take when
no one’s around

The guitar is awesome, great track.

My favourite element of the track is the vocal performance.

Very cool song. I don't want to be rude, the drums sounds super cool, but if the goal was to make it sound "real", it kind of fails. It sounds like cool programmed drums, not live drums. (Drums are tough! I know.)

I really like punk band that did work with drum machines as well. It is a very cool vibe too.

ROCK ON!

(If at some point during the year you'd like me to track some live drums for one of your track, it would be my pleasure!)

Continue to feed us with your cool tracks!

Not rude at all I appreciate the feedback. I Should have completed the caveat: as live as possible for non velocity switching, sequenced drum samples recorded in a good room but programmed to a grid without humanization.  To clarify I was more aiming to make sure robo-drummer 5000 didn't have 3 arms by dropping out 16ths on the hat to cover the snare and fills, making sure there was reasonable fill variation etc. so the part would be realistic.  Also thanks so much for the offer that's very generous, and I'll let you know smile  Thanks for listening.

I LOVE THIS. The vocals are chef's kiss and that guitar sound is perfect for the track's feel. If I listen to this in the car I'll get a speeding ticket.

God damn this is awesome. Agree with others that the vocals are peak. For M8 programmed acoustic drums, they sound great. Your vocal timbre and the drums work together to give it a little Eliminator-era ZZ Top feel…all over that solid post punk base. Love this.

That Donner sounds great. This is a magical time for cheap instruments - I play a couple sub-$100 Glarry instruments, they’re my go-to. Sound  of the lead was awesome as well - loved how I could hear a little amp buzz from it - live and Real.

Those guitars definitely stole my heart, and are definitely getting away with it.
