Jiggy

By gunnbr on January 3, 2026 11:39 pm

For some reason, I had a lilty little Irish jig or Riverdance tune in my head, so I decided to use that for my first week of WB 2026. I actually made a few voice recordings of me "singing" different parts and I was able to get those in the M8, but nothing actually sounded as good as what was in my head. I started out with a call/response using 2 different instruments, but that just didn't come out well, so I switched and decided to do a verse/chorus structure instead. That came together much easier and I ended up with something that I think sounds "okay". I really only used 2 channels, though I threw in a bit of percussion at the end just for some variety and put my "response" instrument in as an outro.

I still really struggle with making songs that are long enough. I feel like I'm still not okay repeating parts of a song a bunch, even though when I learn to play songs on the guitar, many of the songs I love are extremely repetitive.

While playing around on this track, I also ended up with 2 fragments that I can use future tracks. I just hope I remember to come back to this when I need inspiration in upcoming weeks.

Late note: When using Audacity to convert to mp3, I noticed my song looked quiet, so I normalized to -12 LUFS. I hope that didn't make it sound worse.

Sláinte!

It is a fun listen! Like the inspiration behind it.

nice irish chips!

made me smile! it's a nice little ditty!

about repetitive stuff: I'm with you; some grooves are great when repeated many times, some get boring fast. What's the difference? hard to say. I think something to do with syncopation and phrasing, and using chord tones / tones that give some kind of direction to the groove like it describes where the harmony wants to go, and many other small details. For example it's harder to make a bassline groove when just using only tones from the major chord, but something cool happens when using the 7th, or other tones that gives it more color. Even more happens when syncopating the line, and introducing pauses here and there. Making the rhythm interesting and not just the pitches of the notes. I think the same goes for melodies, but the bassline is essential for defining the groove and supporting the other instruments, and this goes for every genre. Maybe check out music you like and try to figure out what they are doing on the bass and melodies, regarding pitches and rhythms. Well at least that's what I'm currently exploring in my own searches. Hope it's helpful / interesting to reflect on!
