sidesplitter - shamanistic retreat

By george bowles on October 17, 2014 7:01 am

to differentiate two methodologies, i've made another electronic music project. in 2013 for the 12EPs project, i began with sidesplitter. it is an EP that doesn't really reflect what is going on with Sidesplitter today, other than the opening track especially is a hint towards the spirit of this side of Sitari (my main decade-old electronic music moniker). what I am filing under the "sidesplitter" alias now and going forward are tracks that are generated more in a live, spontaneous sense, from the meticulously (usually) sequenced style that is most of Sitari. also I sort of wanted another nickname, since Sitari is something that has stuck around for a long time, and i would not have named it that now (I just had enough old friends tell me i should not retire that name). so anyway, I have enough songs for a Sidesplitter album, a more open-ended electronic music project encompassing a more direct and human approach to idm and similar electronic music styles. it also incorporates any collaborations and has a more "live performance" element than sitari will have (which has evolved into sort of a tribute to sequencing and experiment thereof).

Definitely shamanistic! Great choice of drum sounds.  The flute's on a much longer loop than the kick drum/resonant bass and hand percussion, I'm guessing--that's a good approach, because things keep occurring, but in different relationships, for that eternal-hypnotic feel.  It brings to mind Aguirre.  Well done!

thank you! yeah it definitely has some interlocking or re-shifting patterns that are presented in a myriad of ways along the same theme. it was a very enjoyable piece to make, and it sure seems like it doesn't last as long as it actually does! i'd like to think it sweep you up into a shaman's viewpoint of the world, or something to that effect. i really dug how it ended up sounding, i have my gear kinda up to standards now. also, this was the first time i tried running the outs of my soundcard in to the inputs to give it that more analog feel/get it out of the box, and it think it worked pretty well. going through my used guitar cables seems to have given it a little more character.

This deserves to be on infinite repeat :-)

totally adoring this meticulously drum programming, great sounds. Fav!

Great track, love how the drums balances complexity and groove
