Radioactive Beats vol 3 preview: track 4 Easter Preacher Arpeggiator

By george bowles on March 31, 2024 4:17 pm

hey, it's easter! ishtar! or whatever. find some eggs! here's an easter egg preview of an upcoming album that i will be releasing at http://mixelated.bandcamp.com (vol 2 isn't even out yet!).

this is from a session that served both as prep for a show I had on Thursday of very similar material, and for editing into vol 3... but performed in a different way, which will probably end up becoming radioactive beats vol 4.

the idea is to use a drumbrute with two of its channels out into the mixer of a modular synth called the "Field Kit". one of its abilities is to create envelopes and send out into its radio tuner, so the beat channels are able to change radio stations (mostly fm until i get an antenna to do am and sw). so i run a main channel out of the drumbrute, a channel out from the field kit mixer (I send an aux out from the individual drum tracks and then run the radio tuner out into a non auxed channel.

I also am playing hydrasynth while running the drumbrute and field kit so this is all very performative with no overdubbing. one of the stereo hydrasynth channels is going into the recorder and one into the field kit, also switching radio channels. the hydrasynth has a latch function which is good for running arpeggios, or creating a drone sound, which you'll hear throughout radioactive beats vol 3.

tl;dr thank you for checking out my music, this was recorded earlier this week as prep for a live performance. it is all very improvised and in the moment, using three synths: arturia drumbrute, asm hydrasynth explorer, and the field kit modular synth for a very analog experience.

OG EBM vibes washed over with a psychedelic fog of noise and static.  Killer!

I like your laboratory. It sounds experimental and weird.

so many thanks you guys!!! this is so fun to make

Interesting. For me the highlight here is the polyrhythm with the bass arp from 03:30 onwards!

Oh yeah good catch! Definitely a polyrhythm programmed in there, and when I added that arpeggio it really made it feel organic for electronic music at least. Analog helps too! Thanks for listening, this is one of the standout movements of the session.

Very cool experiment! Such a strong atmosphere with those radio voices. I like that  you get small snippets intelligibility, creates a sense of narrative but in cool kind of broken way. Well done!

very creative use of the radio station, adds a lot of atmosphere. also I love those snares. they give me a sense of movement within the track.

thank you all so much! the show went well and after a couple months i'm getting close to perfecting this method... can't wait to do another session as i have refined it some more after doing the show and being more selective with presets and stuff.

Wow! I'm grateful you made me discover your musical universe by stumbling upon mine (just for that, joining weeklybeats was a great idea for me!)

This one is top of my list! Some great moments, especially from 3:30 onward
