Mankind and Its Hungry Ghosts

By george bowles on January 21, 2024 5:23 am

this week i played keyboards to begin with them constructed beats around that, ended up editing the same lengths off the beginning and the end, so i overlapped them and edited them going back and forth towards the beginning third of the track. i also veered away from the sound of the arturia drumbrute and used it as a sequencer and performance tool with a plugin called Emergent Drums which i bought a few months ago. it will create random sampler drumkits on the spot and actually sounds pretty great, and has a lot of variety of sounds for what it is. so the drums are mostly that, and the hydrasynths is the keyboard i began with. besides a few different VSTI-i, layered together, i also was messing around with some weird new effects from neutone and from freakshow industries and cymatics. lots of different angles going on here but with a singular melodic theme. i'm not sure how to describe this track, sort of neo classical, sort of cinematic, sort of just something else, i explore further into some strange rhythms but try to keep it somewhat catchy. it reminds me of being stuck in the middle of winter and just kinda feeling its dread cold. and it feels very introspective and dwelling on the past and history, which wasn't intended it just happened in the initial performance while exploring different synth sounds.

I also have a new EP up at http://mixelated.bandcamp.com i will link to in the comments after this song goes live. I actually started the week with an experimental guitar track using some wild looping fuzz pedals and delays and a multi fx etc. That guitar track i was kind of unsure of and not knowing what i wanted to do with it i set it aside and played the keyboard session i ended up using in the weeklybeats submission. last night i got into production and made a couple of tracks on the bandcamp EP using that guitar recording from my pedalboard setup live into the recording board. There is also another section of the keyboard part that is in the tribal trance track on the EP, and finally a weird idea where i decided to use 64 beat patterns as well as use polyrhythms to create a very strange and annoying beat you can hear on the track 'deep dive' which also serves a little preview to my upcoming radioactive beats series, where i will be using radiowave signals to form envelopes for part of my drumbrute output channels (2 usually plus the unfiltered beats too).

tl;dr thanks for listening!

Just got off work and released this EP, all songs from this week! https://mixelated.bandcamp.com/album/mankind-and-its-hungry-ghosts

Nice! I really like how out it gets rhythmically without ever feeling disjointed. Congrats on the EP release, I'll definitely be checking it out.

That was quite a ride! I like how the arrangement blends together organically.

that is good to hear:) yeah I feel this one is pretty seamless, worked on it a lot. It sounds kinda predictable to me at this point but I've heard it too many times hahah

ooh I like the stumbly rhythmic elements of this at the beginning & hearing them develop into something (somethings?). kind of abstract in a pleasing way.

That's what I'm going for, really good to hear! Thank you for listening 🎧

MIND BENDING RHYTHM...with a nice lil' swing to it too!  Anxious and calm.  You are good at shoving square pegs in round holes musically.  Were you soloing on keys at 4:20?  Weird stuff, pretty great!
