Begun - Future Nujazz Synthesis with Digital Feedback Loops (Deconstructed and Overlaid Edit)

i had been extremely prolific to end 2023 and running on fumes a little but rather than finishing up a movement from a session that was LAST YEAR i coughed out this bad boy.

this one's a survivor made for weeklybeats, since the first and original version was not captured because i simply forgot to hit record! this piece is very performative and done on the fly because i just wanted to make something new for 2024. some of the original version survives in this piece around 4 minutes when it breaks down from the scary honking sounds.

i ended up chopping off the end and placed it at the beginning, and then i edited and crossfaded the main section into something shorter. it was 12 minutes at first but i got it down to under 7 at 256kbps and if anything it might sound better than expected at 256.

Enjoy! this piece was done on Arturia's Drumbrute which has been a ton of fun to work with. I have this triggering a roland jd-xi's built in roland drumkits, mostly 808 or 707 i think. I re-upped on gear for Xmas and now have that Drumbrute, and I also used the Hydrasynth Explorer! to top it all off i had a friend who has been playing around with feedback loops from all types of gear, so i added a performative feedback loop overdub which ended up tying it all together i hope. this was done with a zoom b1on multifx pedal. I will post a related video and bandcamp in the comments.

creative direction: contemplating living a life where you get to witness technologicaly advancement grow into something like a baby god at this point, or will be close. using the feedback loops always gives me a weird unpredictable experience and it shows how cyclical this all can be. and also contemplating the merger of AI, quantum computing, and nanotechnology in sort of a sci-fi sense gave this track a little bit of an industrial cyberpunk edge with dystopian psychedelic backgrounds.

Trippy, futuristic, moody, atmospheric, space-jazz industrial.  Good stuff.

Definitely a soundtrack for a journey through the post-apocalyptic bazaar. I'm here for it.

"space-jazz industrial" is pretty apt, I like it!

thank youuuu!!!

cool blackhole singularity!

really cool performance! It has all the elements, beats, drums, harmony, melodies, but a bit scrambled like a dizzy spell.

Hydrasynth sounds like itself tbh big_smile I know cause I have one too and I enjoy the endless noodling it affords, but it's also predictable because it has the filter, it has the delay, waveforms, the arp, that all have quite a sound.

Thanks for the nice dizzy vibe!

The journey has begun! Had a blast listening to this. Full of surprises.

i'm really vibing with the beat change about halfway through! reminds me of tortoise smile

Nodding my head along with this and getting enveloped in all the textures happening, it keeps you guessing and wondering, which is awesome. It does sound like: "industrial cyberpunk edge with dystopian psychedelic backgrounds!" Nice to see the description of how you made, very interesting. Feedback loops sound fun. I borrowed a hydrasynth recently, that thing's amazing.

omg thank you for all the comments people! i don't know why but this year i cannot quote people in replies so they know i'm replying but i really appreciate these comments, made my day.

Hydrasynth rules the fuck out of my world, i am glad i bought one fairly recently. i'm still "exploring" quite a bit! someone nailed it above when they said this was performance, i am definitely going that route instead of sequencing this year, for the most part. i'm sure i'll have 52 different approaches! or is that 53

A truly epic mind altering journey.  Lots of trippy ear candy to absorb.

oh cool i can quote now, thanks for checking it  out! i like that, trippy ear candy:) that's what i'm going for

Sounds like jamming with David Lynch!!! nice, I want to learn more about feedback and the many ways people create it. thank you

Badalamenti and Lynch are a big influence! as are mr. bungle and john zorn! for feedback, if you have a stereo out on a pedal, or a stereo splitter, run one of the outputs into the input and the other output goes into the recording board or amp. be careful though, this shit is unpredictable and can produce frequencies that can rupture speakers or ear drums, depending on the device! old analog gear can get gnarly, but so can digital feedback especially if within software. digital guitar pedals usually play well with this setup, as they may have some noise reduction built in and stuff like that.

KEEN! Maybe I'll try it sometime with someone else's amp (just kidding of course. But it would be just like me to break something)

Honestly a vibe I can relate with. I've been in a pretty frazzled state as of late. Just feeling fuzzy, nothing cohesive or in tune...always this weird ebb & flow of being in sync and out of sync, until eventually I do hit a flow of harmony that makes sense albeit for a bit of time. Very cool and very interesting track to kick off the new year! Looking forward to more of your stuff!

Also I miss Mr. Bungle!!! I haven't heard that stuff in a good while. I need to catch myself up on their stuff.

One of the longer pieces here! Pretty challenging stuff, but I like how the drums keep the motion going across the different movements. The build starting at 3:30 is my favorite part.

Yes. My kind of stuff. Dig it!

Oh yeah Mr Bungle is the best! Holds up to time. Disco volante is my favorite but all three OG albums are top tier. The thrash album is ok.

I'm glad you liked it! Yeah I've been through a lot the last decade and my brain is frazzled af.

Thanks so much! I plan on doing a lot of weird polyrhythms for my beats to offset all the 4/4 stuff I hear a lot.

very glad to hear! Thank you for listening 🎧🙏

I'm shocked how quickly 7.5 min went by, given this is more bleeding edge music than I typically find myself listening to. Some bits really feeling jonny greenwood to me.

I love this motivation and support you 100% on this hahah

yeah i was kind of amazed how it doesn't feel that long of a listen! i think partly because it was a longer track to begin with and all the fat has been trimmed.
