Fractured

Going into the week I had the idea to try incorporating some piano, so I based my initial idea around the simple piano riff that I started on Saturday. I also added some drums. When I picked it up again on Sunday afternoon, I kind of hated how it sounded and didn't know where to take it. I didn't want to make something that just sounded like everything else I was making for Weekly Beats. But as I plugged away at it I ended up getting inspired by thinking about the BBC thriller The Capture that we'd been rewatching Season 1 of with our older kids (it's brilliant btw). It has a really striking soundtrack by Ian Arber and Dave Rowntree with glissando strings and a sparse piano melody.
I wanted to create something that could work as the main theme for a similar dystopian film or tv show.
I realized once I'd finished the piece that I subconsciously have also taken a lot of inspiration from Icelandic composer/musician Ólafur Arnalds (apparently I stole those 3 violin notes from him). The overall vibe of Only The Winds is similar in a lot of ways to the feel of The Capture soundtrack. If you're not familiar with Ólafur's work you should definitely have a listen, too.
I did want to have those glissando strings in there, but the free BBC Symphony Orchestra library doesn't have that performance feature. Oh well!
I think I probably spent a total of around 5-6 hours on the piece this week.
Enjoy! :]
