Sorry I'm a week late here, but for those of you want want to keep the weekly music going through 2019 there's a streak club page here: https://streak.club/s/1002/weekly-music-2019
(late submissions are open so if you want to back submit for last week you can)
streak.club is a site I made a few years back inspired by weekly beats that gives people a space to regularly post creative content (music, art, writing) while filling their "streak calendar". I'm not hosting the 2019 music streak but if anyone has any issues I'd be glad to help out.
ps it's open source too, so contributions welcome: https://github.com/leafo/streak.club

TLDR: I'm running a Weekly music 2017 streak
Hey all, back when I originally did 2014 weekly beats, I liked the idea so much that I built a website for hosting similar kinds of regular creative activities.
Since it doesn't appear there will be a weekly beats 2017 I've set up a weekly music streak on streak.club so you can continue writing music weekly:
https://streak.club/s/831/weekly-music-2017
I've enabled late submission on it so if you miss a deadline you can submit late and your post will be tagged appropriately.
The site works very similarly to weekly beats, you can upload MP3 and listen to them on the site, there's a comments section on each post, and there's a global message board. Some other nice features as well: you can follow people to see a feed of their posts, and you can keep track of your personal streak and see stats.
I hope you find it useful, thanks for checking it out!

Re: Open source music (11 replies, posted in General Discussion)
I do all of my composition on Linux. The only non-open source stuff I use is renoise (it's my main daw).
Here's some stuff I've used
Qtractor, a decent piano roll sequencer: http://qtractor.sourceforge.net/qtractor-index.html I'll use this when I want to export a MIDI from something I've written in renoise
Seq24, another piano roll sequencer, but focused on creating smaller loops that you build a song from http://www.filter24.org/seq24/ Never wrote anything in here, but I actually use this to practice instruments by making little loops I play along with
Alib Tracker, a tracker of OLP3 http://www.adlibtracker.net/ I've written one song in this, pretty good
Plugins:
Calf plugins, bunch of stuff, I use them to master http://calf-studio-gear.org/
Hexter, DX7 emulator: http://dssi.sourceforge.net/hexter.html
Qsynth, SF2 module: http://qsynth.sourceforge.net/qsynth-index.html
Whysynth, really powerful synth, my go-to if I need some synth noises: http://smbolton.com/whysynth.html
JAMin, a tool for mastering http://jamin.sourceforge.net/en/about.html I used to use it but I've since switched to calf tools for everything
Drums:
Hydrogen, a drum machine http://www.hydrogen-music.org/hcms/ I've never written music in it, but I'll use it like a module, I'll pipe midi into it to use their sample packs, which can be pretty good
All of the above mostly use Jack, which I recommend: http://www.jackaudio.org/
I use qjackctl to connect all my jack devices: http://qjackctl.sourceforge.net/
