On the topic of traffic jams, I find indicator phase differences between multiple cars when waiting to turn right or left to be inspiring.

I've been listening to this quite a bit in the last few days. Refined simplicity with sugary sounds. http://comtruise.bandcamp.com/

Lazerscale seemed such a good idea on day 1 of that. Not so much on day 365. Go us.

/me high fives Lazerbeat.

WeaklyBeets will be much cruisier.

Just wait until the last moment to upload a track. Or put up with the possibility of being doomed. In terms of a progression of ideas that lead to the final thing that's being uploaded: you can always link to uploads of drafts within the description of your WeeklyBeats upload, if that is something you would like to do, I guess (right?). These drafts would have to be stored elsewhere, though. If you would like some space for this purpose (and assuming you don't have hosting elsewhere), drop me a line.

Lazerscale only had a handful of people - communication was easily taken care of over IRC or email if needed.

There are many more people doing WeeklyBeats. It makes sense to have a forum to foster a community and make collaborations easier as well as sharing thoughts etc.

I agree with Poppi re: closing it off. It makes sense to me - one question might be whether or not we are expecting many more people or not.

I disagree with Poppi re: chip-centric nature of WeeklyBeats. Plenty of people not involved in the chip scene seem to be into WeeklyBeats.

Isn't 3068 tracks @ 3 mins per track 9204 minutes of music? Which is like, 6 days or something?

Fair enough, just curious.

Good to hear you're on board! big_smile

I think I'm going to first try a systematic approach to composing music, and see how that goes, maybe something like:

Day 1: Pick theme / Studio setup / Create DAW template
Day 2: Chord structure / Mood / Maybe 2 movements / Key sig / etc
Day 3: Intro & solid structural guideline
Day 4: Finished song structure / movements / transitions
Day 5: Tweeking any bits, working on mix
Day 6: Render / upload

Do you think you will be boxing yourself in in some form or limiting certain thought processes by going about things in such a systematic way?

Okay, so of course the challenge here is to write a track a week for all of 2012. I was thinking that some of us probably have some goals that we want to achieve via WeeklyBeats - e.g. explore new ways of writing music, improve composition skills at one particular instrument, learn how to use new software or hardware etc.

Let's share some!

For me, I want to learn a few pieces of software that I've never used, including Renoise and PD for example. I would also like to write more music for interesting combinations of instruments, e.g. cello and chiptune. Additionally, I want to spend maybe a month or so building a piece of hardware each week, and then writing a new track for it each week.

I am not sure how feasible these ideas will be once the year actually begins, but it's nice to dream big_smile
