Sevdalino, maloj mome dzanam

By fetalface on July 5, 2026 9:07 pm

Goofy recording of a beautiful Macedonian diaphonic chant, taught to us at Mendocino Balkan Camp 2026 by the amazing Michele Simon. It's supposed to be just two voices, the drone and the melody, but i added some extra harmonies in there after a long day and a few beers. If you want to hear shit done seriously right then check out Kitka's new album at http://www.kitka.org/ or learn how from the best, Michele's website at https://www.michelesimonsimplyvoice.com/

"Sevdalina, dear young girl
Are you still unmarried,
Are you still burning up the world?

I wade through water, Sevdalina.
I wade through water, but I go thirsty!
I ride a horse, but I walk on foot."

(traditional Macedonian, from Daniel Spasov & Vladimir Kuzov, transcribed & translated by Rachel MacFarlane, presented by Michele Simon in 2026)

excellent!

excuse me this is awesome

the 1:33 harmony into the 1:41 conclusion sounds EXACTLY like something from Koyaanisqatsi soundtrack from Philip Glass - I got goosebumps!

Thanks, likewise! I'm catching up listening to your tracks but the last 1/3 of #26 (cathartic), and #25 (painfully poignant) are really speaking to me. I am intrigued, these are pretty far-out interpretations of olde chestnuts if that's what they are and i love them even more for it! Yowza.

On your #24, the rainy/staticky gap instead of a segue is really, really compelling actually IMO

Woah this is awesome! Love the harmonies you did and how they resolve! smile

Having listened to my fair share of various music from the balkans it was really refreshing hearing these voices isolated without anything else around. Great work with the harmonies as well. Does not sound goofy at all to me, I really enjoyed this one - well done!

wow wow wow. i really love this
thank you, fetalface
