Always coming home

By fetalface on December 15, 2024 6:57 pm

An adaptation of "From the People of the Houses of Earth" from Ursula LeGuin's book, Always Coming Home.
She's the greatest

Contemplative and mysterious. I enjoyed this. Using multiple really singing is rare in WB and sounds really nice.
I read Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin like 30 years ago, that was pretty interesting!

Thanks! I wasn't too happy with the results this week but always glad to have made an effort smile
I had kinda looked down my nose at sci fi/fantasy since adolescence, but got hooked on Le Guin not so many years ago.
Actually it started maybe 6 or so years ago when a friend played me a copy of the cassette that came along with this book when it was first published in 1985. It's a fantastic album and has been reissued & is available on Bandcamp.

The book is even more wonderful. I'm re-reading it right now. Highly recommend. Probably hits harder for folks who have lived in California at all. If you give it a go, let me know what you think!!

solid lyrics, got me in a trance, and that harmony is remakable!

remarkable*

this is fantastic, fetalface!
i need to read some LeGuin. checking out that bandcamp album you linked above, fun!

really love your vocals on this one, cheers  smile

YEah, the Buchla on the first track of that album is far out. I like the rest of it too but i also kind of want to hear a whole Todd Barton Buchla album. I bet those exist...

one of the songs from the Urula / Barton bandcamp (i think it was A Homesick Song - which is a great title) reminded me of this Silvia Tarozzi album:
Mi specchio e rifletto

particularly the title track. i'm not sure they are singing the same word, but it did sound like Occhio...

how great is this:

Occhio
per occhi
per naso
per viso
sorriso.
Mi specchio e rifletto porzioni di me.

which translates to:

Eye
for eyes
for nose
for face
smile.
I mirror and reflect portions of me.

anyway! hope yr week is going well. maybe in 2026 you and emily and i can record something with a 3 part harmony. i can imagine it!

*Ursula

Love the instrumentation and mysterious/haunting feeling this has. The harmony and call and response vocals also sound great. The lyrics have me intrigued, Ursula LeGuin was already on my list to check out but may have to move to the top.

This has such an amazingly religious vibe to it! Damn, such great atmosphere.
I haven't really read much of her work, but "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" is truly incredible.
Great job!!!

Wow! Cool stuff. "Over the course of nearly a decade, Tarozzi practiced setting the poetry of Alda Merini to music and then replacing it with her own to reflect her own life experiences." That's so interesting!
I would love to collab. We could even do that in 2025 smile
Thanks again

A beautiful and haunting tune! I like how the energy gradually gets softer towards the end

Lovely. These vocals are as beautiful as the words, really wonderful song. I love Ursula's work but I'm also enchanted by some of the older paperback cover art for her books - delightfully retro and unapologetic, treasures I found in the basement of the local used bookstore. This reminded me of those and made me smile.

indeed, and indeed!

The part starting with "the hungry, the powerless (...)" is properly powerful songwriting. I liked that build a lot. Thanks for introducing me to the poem from the book. Added to my reading list.

this is really beautiful
