What Keeps You Up At Night?

By fc on June 1, 2014 4:55 am

What keeps you up at night? To be fair, not much keeps me awake when I'm tired. But this is what's been buzzing around my head for the last week. Hashtag researchlyf hashtag phdlife.

Many thanks to Apple's OSX voice synthesizer "Alex". Realised in Ableton Live.

Texts taken from:

Situngkir, Hokky. "On Selfish Memes: Culture as Complex Adaptive System."  (2004).

Dawkins, Richard in Blackmore, Susan J. The Meme Machine. Oxford University Press, 1999.

Abel, Chris. "Virtual Evolution–a Memetic Critique of Genetic Algorithms in Design."  (2007).

Lynch, Aaron. "Units, Events and Dynamics in Memetic Evolution." Journal of Memetics-Evolutionary Models of Information Transmission 2, no. 1 (1998).

These are some of the catchiest lyrics I've ever heard. Well done, well done.

Haha. Thanks! I can't tell if you're being sarcastic... they are pretty catchy though. Can you count the amount of times "natural selection" becomes audible?

Stop Dave!

Well, maybe a little bit sarcastic, but it's a welcome difference from the insipidity of most lyrics, and an excellent treatment of "Alex."

Thanks! Thanks very much.

Haha.... my brain!

Great idea for a track, and much more musical result (to me at least) than I would have thought.

So this is what a Phd sounds like? ;P

What are you using for those pitch shifts?

Nah, it's what the brain of a PhD candidate sounds like. tongue

Just the envelope automation for the transposition of pitch in Live, on clips (in arrange view).

Creepy.  Love it!

Very sweet. Alex's voice has a special taste. I -think- it has bee introduced before OSX. I will have to check that.
