W24 - Skyward NL Explore (nanoloop mobile)

Care taking family home and borther's dog. Very slow and quiet. Incredibly boring but also filled with small tasks. Worked on Delorean again. Exploring the city over a decade out from residence. Things have physically changed but the culture is the same. Conservative. Heard gun shots. No friends and non communal neighbor hood. Empty Lots filled with house that now have aged 30 years. Gate kept public spaces now filled with diverse faces. Recognizable neighbors mostly gone. House is now just for sleeping. lifestyle and homeness overridden for quick drop off with very little hospitality left except for master bedroom. The change feels disappointing and a bit sad. Occupant VTC can never stop moving or care take for the space. Threw out year expired food. Organized spaces again filled with junk. Bound to be worse by the end.

I miss my partner, home, healthier lifestyle, and community. Above all I miss the culture. I am still enjoying the silence and some old things. I am enjoying the company of this old dog and tending to him in his old age. More bike rides, walks, reading and watching. Decompression and confirmations. Hot summer feels nice. Finding new in an old place and time to reflect unbothered. Good things ultimately. A lot of clarity. Short lived return to isolation. Setup DVD and TV. Scrubbing through closets and drawers.

Brought substantial amount of gear but struggled with some technical issues in gettin hardware to sync with Ableton. Out of frustration and limited time, decided to work in a closed single system at least for WB submission. Been Ipad a lot and ended up opening nanoloop for the first time in a while. No samples were stored on device so I created a drum machine sample set in Nanoloop using resampling and layering. Experimented with sequencing in some new ways and ended up making something out of my test session with the NL synthesized drum sample. Spent about 4 hours over the next few days writing the rest of the song on and off between care taking for Alphonse and organizing/cleaning. Recorded into DR-40 to try and use preamps to add character. Took stereo recording to master in Ableton.

All sounds from nanoloop only. Level mixing done in NL too. First use of the new Mixing/mastering headphones (Sennheiser hd 490 pros). Lazy mastering and on the fly mixing.

Love the groove of the drums and percussion throughout.  So many cool bits of ear candy that are quietly doing there part and not overtaking each other.  Suhweet outro with the swirly bits too.  Nice work!

even the beginning melody is noteworthy -- sounds slightly microtonal, i very much appreciate that. also like the sparsity of FX. very cool.

This is really coll especially with the fact this is all Nanoloop.
Crazy to me that you're able to whip up these sick jams in under a week while having so much going on.

i think i've mentioned this before, but yr tracks really jump out of the speakers in a cool way. even these crappy lil guys i'm listening to. cheers!

It really conveys that sense of an empty neighborhood.
I quite like that ending.

Thanks for the kind words heart NL's eco system really encourages exploration when you get into it. It's hard not to try and squeeze all those micro explorations in big_smile

Thank you! I wish microtuning was an option in NL. It's just a slow LFO adjusting slightly adjusting pitch so it is slightly out sometimes. NL Mobile doesn't really have effects so I ended up imitating with sequencer tricks. I'd say the effects part is more of a limited function of the software then my own choosing tongue

It's very "medium is the message" with Nanoloop. Basically the eco system really dictates the form of the songs in Nanoloop.

Thanks! The chiptune background really comes in handy for min maxing resources and NL mobile's environment makes it quick work especially with a larger touch interface like the ipad. I feel like you could get into it from what I know of your work. All the chip foundations are there but with a more graphical approach.

That is very meaningful feedback to me, thank you. Mixing and mastering is one of those things I feel like is a constant learning experience that I am a bit self conscious about.

I mostly work in the box or direct line in. What I find impressive is what both you and cursory do. Mic'd recording is a beast that I wish I was more refined in but you 2 seem to have that dialed in. I am impressed every week by that.

Thank you! That imagery sounds accurate to what I was experiencing when writing it. That and melting away in 100˚F weather. It's all felt a bit alien.

very relatable! emily and i sometimes talking about that... like we'll start to feel some confidence and that we're starting to feel like we know what we're doing and then BOOM back down to earth. sometimes i listen back to older recordings and start to think i should take all these old recordings down and rework them.
the most frustrating is when i spend a bunch of time reworking an old mix and think i have it all spiffed up and then... oh crap, the old one actually sounds better - D:
i do feel like this weekly practice has been good for me though. and besides improving skills it's helped me to accept that hey, this is the best i was able to do right now with the time i had and let go. and i also have to remind myself how much i enjoy other peoples recordings that they might think are really rough or speedtrash or whatever. ultimately (for me at least) it's about if the feeling comes through.
