W20 - Nonsense

By ENC_ on May 19, 2024 9:14 am

Visiting hometown to celebrate late with VTC. AL left to meet old coworker from NY and friends. Discussed product development program. Sounds intriguing. More time outside, tan coming in strong. Tetris made on the score board. Summer program shorter then expected. Disappointed. Shopped korean mart today and smoke shop chocolate for brother. Talked with him and caught up while discussing plans for VTC. Slow day. Crossfade from previous night. Weekly session was positive. A lot of small pleasant things adding up to a good space.

Consumed 1, 2, 3, 4,5, 6, Basquiat and content addiction, New Polygonia, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Orphee, Virtual, The Smiths Meat is Murder, Rolando simmons No Sleep,

Discovered GBA game with a lofi break and cut to sample and process. Tested to see if break was usable or too lo rez. Ended up getting far in the test song and finished out the process. After export and recording external gear, assembled in Ableton. Basic mixing and mastering job. Minor post process edits to help transitions and support structure.

no words, just amazing!

love this kind of discordant idm. I gotta know which game it is you pulled the break from.

Thanks! I am not quite happy with the mix but sometimes that's just how it goes smile

It's Aggressive Inline for the Game Boy Advanced right at the title screen. I should have sampled from hardware but out of convenience I used the emulator (I didn't want to dig out my GBA). Hardware might have had a more pleasing character. I did some processing Ableton to get rid of the bass and adjust the speed so it might not be immediately recognizable.

i love the movement and detail in this track, mix sounds great to my (admittedly fatigued) ears  smile

Love the thickness to this track.  The mix sounds great to me and the beat just kicks n grooves so nicely.  Such nice fills in between the breaks too. Excellent work! And yay Black Dog/Plaid!

Lovely percussion.

love all the dissonance, really inspiring and you made it look easy. i also love all the syncopation, adds so much energy and intrigue. well balanced track, nicely done!

So cool! Really love how big the kick feels and this beat in general. 1:39 is an awesome shift in feel. All the different percussive elements and textures make this feel so lush.

All in all, a lot of happy nothing, and that's good.

Thanks for checking it out and I am glad you enjoyed it big_smile The mix complaint is a bit nit picky of me. Depending on what device you listen back on the kick bass eats a lot of the other instruments. For a "demo" it's fine though. I just would like to check things on better mixing headphones and monitors. To my ears it didn't pass the car stereo test when I listened later is all.

c’est la vie.

Haha, Yeah I was surprised I've never sat down to listen to Black Dog. I've enjoyed a lot of Plaid over the years. Somehow I never connected the 2 were related until reading about Warp's older compilations last week.

Thank you for kind words smile Percussion is mostly different forms or lo resolution sampling cut in different ways. I was surprised but happy with how the Midines samples mixed with the GBA break and older drum machines samples.

That sounds accurate to me. "Happy nothing" is a good place to be sometimes smile I'll try to enjoy it while I can.

i very much relate to this. i often struggle with wanting to go back and remix or re-finalize earlier stuff (or even "official" releases) after i've learned new things, or when i listen back and hear a pile of mistakes. but yeah... TIME

weekly beats has definitely helped me let go of that a bit, but still! hope you had a good one. i look forward to hearing what you came up with this week!

Another great one! That crusty break works brilliantly.
