Chest beater

By drmindflip on April 13, 2014 10:30 pm

Hi everyone! The most brief of messages this week - I have half of the Dr. Mindflip band waiting in the living room to do an impromptu rehearsal for an even more impromptu gig that might be happening on Tuesday! It's getting real... big_smile

A special word of thanks to all of you for your encouragement with my new EP - I left a very modest but sincere thank you in the liner notes of the booklet, and it really has been an amazing experience being part of this community. Roll on the summer beats!

This track is back to rough-and-ready sound, as I don't have a good mic this week, but I will revisit it later - hope you enjoy it! smile

Chest beater:

Is this a mating display that's gone and lost its way?
Your little pantomime has wasted quite enough of my time
You know that needlessly striving, weakness-denying,
Steady degradation is worse
So don't you worry about the living and dying
Puking and crying
Just leave it to the experts

Walking on the wind
Your words ain't coming in loud and clear
Cos you're talking nonsense
Truth it bends in a torus when the cracks appear

I don't care about your imagined conquests
Supposed banging-prowess
Your fickle outlook
How many merry go round routes you took
And while the eagles are flying
You're ego-supplying
Shovelling your crumbling self-worth
Your grasp upon the monomyth's tenuous
Obscene, disingenuous
Your true emancipation will hurt

Walking on the wind
Your words ain't coming in loud and clear
Cos you're talking nonsense
What makes you think that I want to hear your bullshit?

Cos you're a chest beater
You're a born leader
You're a dispute feeder
An affection needer
Let all the rest peter away their time
Neither standing here nor there
While I hide my despair beneath choreographed airs and graces
And Instagram faces
I'm bouncing off walls
Making you feel small and peaceful by comparison
It's embarrassing that this well-worn and jaded show
Is all I know

Oh that intro got me pumped, and the song didn't let me down either! This one has the doctor written all over it! Love it!

This one is definitely getting some ekayi playin' through an Ableton Live session! Drums? Yes please!

Oh, and by the way - if you ever leave your voice box unattended, I'm stealing it.

Your "rough and ready" is most peoples' "awesome."

Thanks a million dude! Most of this happened since I was chatting to you earlier - all a bit of a blur! I would love to hear the ekayi magic all over this...I can send you stems?

Thanks a million Edmund, I wasn't sure about this one but every week has its own character I guess smile

The pianoness in between the first and second phrases reminded me a bit of Elliott Smith's ivories.  Your lyrics always have a cool way of flowing of each line along with the piano.  I couldn't help but smile when I heard the "What makes you think that I want to hear your bullshit?" line.  The almost sarcastic feel of the piano gave me a vision of you playing the line with one hand while the other held your chin up and then a smirk to the listener smile  or the uncensored version just a middle finger smile  Nice job this week and congrats on the EP release I will have to give them a proper sit down listen!

Let's do this! big_smile

while your other tracks had a mike patton feel, i think this one had a kind of zappa feel to it. either way, bravo

You have such a gift for lyrics. I know I'll be entertained every week.

Ohhhh... those tasty modulations in that intro had me hooked from the start! Love the whole pace of the song by the way ... really the perfect tempo to match the fantastically conversational lyrics. And of course, I died at the "bullshit" section ;-)

Delicate and expressive at the same. Well done!

Hi friends! This is a rather cheeky way of getting a message to you all - please forgive the intrusion but this is big news and I need your help.

Everyone here has encouraged me and changed the way I feel about creating music dramatically over the past 4 months - you have all started a journey that I am so excited about and I can't thank you enough.

Here are my friends from the Dr. Mindflip band:

I'm currently 2nd place in the Irish group of the EuroMusic 2014 competition. If I'm in the lead by the 10th of May, we'll have a chance to travel to Paris and play in front of thousands! It's genuinly life-changing stuff...

Please vote for me at http://euromusiccontest.com/dr-mindflip and help me have a genuine dream come true - you can vote once per day until the 10th of May and every single little click counts. You can also follow our progress at http://www.facebook.com/drmindflip where we will probably be doing some ridiculous stuff to express our gratitude.

I can't thank you all enough for your help so far - if you can spare 10 seconds a day to click that link over the next 3 weeks, it could change my life. Plus, I'll get to namecheck Weekly Beats live on TV that's being broadcast to (apparently) 88 different countries big_smile

Thank you so much,

Patrick / Dr. Mindflip
