Get acquainted with trackers. Here you use the computer keys to input note events and use keyboard shortcuts to 'program' and navigate through tracks and patterns. It may look daunting at first, or rigid / spreadsheet editor like matrix unfurling ...but it's quite good imo. Especially for technical breakbeat stuff. IF you're into that stuff I really recommend Renoise.
