Rust Bucket Tomorrow

By Disposable Planet on January 7, 2026 1:47 am

Didn't have too much time this week (I'm driving down to volunteer at MAGFest 2026 at Chipspace!) so I dusted off an old sketch as per WB rules and made it better.   Reworked the bassline, sound design and other elements.   Eventually perhaps I want to add a B part and second melody and maybe even an interlude or bridge but as of now it feels way more complete.

The chords are an m8 hypersynth with a little reverb.  Nothing fancy.   Was trying to recapture the sound of the macrosynth's WAV PARAPHONIC engine.   Added some chopped breaks and one shots.   Starts out with a little flatpicking tremolo effect and then launches into a PWM lead that sounds to me a little like as if Squarepusher was in the demoscene or something.

Bass got entirely retooled.   It's double layered.   On the bottom is a sub bass effect created with a very simple FMsynth patch made entirely of sines with a lowpass filter.    Then on top of that is a wavetable wavsynth instrument with an LFO set to SCAN and RANDOM to randomly change the wavetable shape every two steps.   I played long drawn out notes in phrase and used the values in the velocity column to create a gating effect on the notes so they sound as if they are being played but allow for long pitch drops and bends that smoothly occur during the on/off effect.

I'll make a video and update this entry when I get back from MAGFest.

Thanks for listening!   And thanks to all the folks who left supportive comments on last week's track of mine (the one which was almost lost forever due to an SD card mishap).   It means a lot!

Great energetic track! That lead sounds amazing, both from a sound design and a melody perspective smile

Very nice! I especially like the bass sound. Thanks for also detailing how it came about. Always nice to get some ideas this way. smile I hope you had a great time at MAGFest by the time you read this.

Have a great time at MAGFest

Thank you!  Yeah the bass is two layers which is easy to do on the M8 due to the increased number of channels over LSDJ.   I did have a blast at MAG!

Just got back!   It was so much fun seeing old friends and making new ones!

This whole thing but that pad/that break is just killer, dude!

Thank you so much!

Love this, man!
That's a clever trick (to play long notes and use velocity to create a gated rhythm.)
Feel like I always learn something when I engage with your music.
Great job!

Loving the little ragged edge on that bass. The lead nuances are great!

Oh man “nothing fancy” but that prolonged chord thru the intro is luuuush heart

Been a fan of yours for several years now (discovered you thru WB22) and this “dusted off” thing is no exception—really love the chill vibe and the tickling nature of the little glitched out chip sounds. heart

man those leads are fire

Thanks!  Yeah I use that a lot when making dnb basslines.   It allows you create the impression of 16th note or 8th note runs in the bass while allowing you to perform pjitchslides that occur smoothly over the course of the phrase.   Think of it as a smoothly descending or ascending pitch drop that is even over all the notes.

Glad you liked it!  thanks for listening.   Yeah looking back i probably could have spent a little more time on the bass but doubling up the layers definitely added some bite.

Was trying to get the sound of the WAV PARAPHONIC macrosynth engine in the hyper synth.   Forgot what I used for the tickling tremolo.   I just posted a video which should be able to load into this description above shortly.   You can check out the M8 waveforms.  I think I turned the SHAPE down a lot on the tremolo.

Amazing, seriously!

This is rad! I love the chill chords over the fast percussion. The lead is great too. Definitely worth revisiting, but the vibes here already are great. smile

Thanks!   Yeah I'm obsessed with the sound of the WAV PARAPHONIC macrosynth engine on the M8 Tracker.   It's the perfect companion to jungle breaks so my goal here was to try and recreate its sound using the Hypersynth engine instead so I could have multiple chord banks.   Thanks for listening!

love the breaks and that bass is thiiiiick and sounds great! super soaring leads too! excellent!
