Arps of Life

By Devieus on August 22, 2018 4:34 am

Back at it with some procedural generation. By request, now with public access code in the public domain (i.e. if you think you can do better, prove it).

Change this week include the return of the major scale, the removal of tempo changes (might return to that at a later point) and the removal of the harmony track. Instead I have an arpeggiating rhythm track playing all the sixteenths, but in a way that it follows a chord progression which itself is generated four times throughout the song (line 170) by putting four chords in sequence always starting in C (line 136) and then turning that into arpeggios (line 144).

Then I have the bass track follow up on the rhythm track instead of the other way around to get a tight chord presence going, but keeping the lead doing whatever.

Then I just did my usual thing in VSCL.

Maybe I'll do some fancy instrument or tempo stuff again next time. Or perhaps making some headway into line 293.

Tricky. Not sure if I could do better, but I could certainly do worse.

Yay procedural composition!  This has a nice groove to it.
Been meaning to ask, what's your tool of preference?

I'm sure you can do better, though the amount of music theory in it does mean it's definitely possible to do worse.

You can read about it on my github page for it. Basically the composition is all Python, the output is put into Macrotunes, which converts it into sound, and that is put into Magix VSCL for some extra mastering.

into this! tempo changes would be nice for sure :-))

I'll see if I can put it back next time.

Without the tempo changes and adding the arps, this becomes the most popiest of the series. Melodically pleasing in the major scale. Coincidentally, my full width back tattoo is "Arps for Life".

It's back to the basics. Back to square one. The first level. Gotta know the rules to break the rules.

Arps for life.

The major scale gives it a nice happy cheerful vibe and the arps add a good sense of forward motion.  Adds a little sunshine to the day.  Arps in the key of life??? smile

It's really just C major because I can't really be arsed to make it something else. That said I can probably tweak it so it becomes F Lydian or B Locrian fairly easily. As long as it's all the white keys and heptatonic.

Arps for Life indeed. Another interesting, unique creation.

This has a nice system music feel to it. Soothing despite it´s pure digital soundworld.

Can I get lime with that heptatonic?

Unique is good. If it'd made something pre-existing, I'd question my purpose in life.

I think it might be the lead, it's somehow nicely organic.

You know where they are.

Great piece! I'm curious as to how procedural composition works. Seems like the kind of technique that really blurs the line between the human and the machine during the process.

The program is available to the public, so if you're that curious you can look it up.

It's arguably just mother brain.

Sweet and sugary, with just a hint of cinnamon spice.. oh yes, so lovely!

It's good and it's good for you.

I'd like to hear the fast beat in the background way louder cause it's all cool already, just need more rhythm.

The arps? I can do that, but they'd probably dominate way too much. I'll bump it up by two ticks though.
