deductible-hittin' beats

I used to almost always start tracks with a harmonic or melodic idea from sitting in front of the piano. Here lately they've mostly been springing out a synth patch or some m8 table gimmick. (And eventually, I have to turn back to the piano to work my way out of the hole I've dug myself into.)

This one started with the little chimey-sequence at beginning. It was so pleasant and happy, and I thought it'd be sort of strange to put wild drums against it. So that's sort of what I did. At one point I intended to render a drum loop down and then chop it up breakbeat style. But the drums took center stage and I just kept developing them in place. More flexible and more natural to do weird tuples and stuff anyway.

Also, every time someone comments about how crazy my drums were, it just makes me want to make them crazier next time.

the warpy leads/bass are so fun

almost distract from the drums nonsense

Love how frenetic this one is! I also love those little rests, where you have moments of silence but it never loses the energy.

This goes insanely hard with all the glitchy elements n stuff. Love it! smile

The drums in this are crazy (hint hint). Such a wild ride of a track. I love the weird bassline that comes in around halfway through. That trilling lead with the drum breakdown is also sooooooooooooooooooo cool. Nice job!

Looove the oomph of that bass patch. Feels like a guide cutting through the vines of the drum jungle for me, but we're also on a rollercoaster with some unexpected turns. big_smile
Know the feeling of digging yourself into a hole with the sound design first approach. Any tips on how to overcome that? I usually duplicate the loop and take out everything but one element and try to rebuild something different around that, and then usually the two sections will end up swapping elements again and a common thread emerges... something like that.

Can't take me away from that super funky stuff, even if you try to throw a curveball with all the bonkers percussion. Love the upbeat opening chime patch. Lots of crazy noodling and awesome drum choppage going on. Really cool how the rhythm sometime seem to shift in tempo along with the chords. Too much? MORE!!

Thank you! Sometimes I default to frenetic on trackers and have to look for opportunities to breath.

Thank you! You know, I've started to make a list of strategies to dig myself out a musical hole a few times and never really have followed through. But my go-to is to change (physical) instruments. Even if I do a terrible job at playing it, translating a phrase from, say, sequencer to piano inevitably makes me understand the phrase better and suggests new directions.

Thanks! I think the tempo shifts you're hearing are the hats switching between 3, 4, and 5 tuplets. Crazy how it makes the rhythm slip even when nothing else changes.
