the dungeon was my soul

By ddmm64 on June 9, 2024 11:51 pm

There's a biweekly jam on the M8 discord and this time's theme was "dungeon synth". I thought maybe I'd submit something. Twist: I don't really know what dungeon synth as a genre sounds like, and I didn't try to find out. Just made something dark and musty, like my soul.

Made on M8, using only synth engines.

LOOOOOOOOL

I like the approach you're taking here. I'm not super aware of what "Dungeon Synth" is **supposed** to sound like either, so you 100% convinced me! Hahahahaha... Dark, gritty and gnarly. I can totally see a party of (pixelated) adventurers carefully wading through a monster-filled dungeon, slowly making their way to the big bad.

I'm such a sucker for those raw chippy sounds. Straight to my heart, hahahaha...

Sounds like it could be dungeon synth to me. I don't know either. Great sounds and vibe you got. Love that lead around 2:15, soaring to the win, beating the dungeon boss, rescuing the princess. Shaking off the mustiness from the soul. The dark and musty night of the soul (in a dungeon)!

mission accomplished, thankfully the jam organizers aren't too strict about these prompts big_smile

thank you, I love those PWM sounds, they always cut through pretty much anything on the mix!

Yeaah, I've never been into chiptune itself (I've heard a lot of great chiptune tracks, just never really explored the genre) but always loved that "pixelated" sound palette, just embracing the crunchy aliased quality of low-bitrate digital sound.

It's got synths, and it fits a dungeon. If dungeon synth is anything else, it's like that jungle genre, not at all related to the words used to describe them, and all the worse for it.

Definitely gives me dungeon-crawler vibes. Lots of impactful moments like when the bass/synth come in at :28 and the transition to lighter pad sounds around 1:10, then both together at the end was super satisfying.

Well not dungeon synth, but synths in a dungeon, yes! XD Enjoyable nonetheless! I am also not 100% sure what dungeon synth should be, you can check my efforts in my early weekly beats this year should you feel like it ;P (shameless plug I know)

Really like the lead at the end!

ha, yeah I mean I can see how jungle maybe sort of made sense as a name even if I'm seeing conflicting stories on its origin.

smile thank you! I've never really played a dungeon crawler, unless maybe zelda counts?
