Menton Finds

Fors.fm released the FMS groovebox software for the Gameboy Advance last week, and I've had a jolly old time getting it to work on various hardware boxes. For now it's running well on my GBA, GBA SP, New 3DS and Anbernic.

Anyway, here's the first attempt at a track. Due to convenience/time restrictions I ran the software in the mGBA emulator on my PC. Recorded the stereo out via Audacity, then imported to Ableton for light mastering (Vulf Compressor and EQ). The FM synthesis and sound engine is 8 bit, so it all comes across nice'n'crunchy.

This track is a single 16 step pattern performed live and "arranged" by muting in real time with the game controller. There is at least one mute fumble in there. big_smile

Since FMS shares some ideas with Nanoloop and LSDJ, it wasn't too hard to get going.

Stuff I tried to figure out:
- Navigating the UI with the game controller
- Basic synthesis and sequencing w/parameter locks
- Logics to create longer sequences / variations
- Different track rates for even longer sequences
- Panning / echoes

Will look into the phrase/transpose and scale functions next.

Thanks for listening, have a lovely week!

Awesome 8 bit crunch!

I heard about that groovebox, super cool that you've jumped on it and made a sick track.

The nasty bass is my fav. It's really making me think about the Amiga games of my youth.

Really nice FM funk, some great early results! I read about FMS coming out but I had no time to try it or learn about its features, so it's nice to hear some sounds that it can produce.

Nice one! I did a FMS track this week too. I've been really liking the control in the sequencing. It's been cool seeing everyone explore FMS and hearing how everyone is using the tool.

My miyoo mini plus had some issues when the echos got to complicated but it worked perfectly on all of my GBA units. I might need to pick up an Anbernic device instead.

Thanks parappayo!

Listening back it sounds nice, yeah. I've since steered off into a more jammy and more polymetric direction with the FMS. Combining both approaches would probably be nice.

Cheers, ENC_! Will have a listen to your FMS track(s), too!

I've been making FMS tracks on a PC emulator as well as on handhelds, enjoy both.
