Trying to Start my 1962 Chevy in 1976

By Daisy on August 11, 2024 8:38 pm

This is about the powder blue Chevy that I drove as a teen.

It starts kind of happy-- like I'm thinking this car will start!
The octave in the bass line is me pumping the gas.
The buzz is the ignition having different ideas.
Then there was always this ticking sound that would mystify me.
The BIG pauses are me flooding the engine. Having to wait 10 minutes.
Then I start again, and there are other noises (arghhh) coming from under the hood.
The angry glissandi are me becoming exasperated.
I never got it is started.

Epilogue
I lived with Grease-Monkeys as a child.  Cars and parts of cars all over the yard. Cars being jacked up, timing lights being shone on recalcitrant belts, tires, wheels, transmissions, clutches..    EEK.

BUT. My sister and I never had a car that would start.  They often played other tricks, these cars we had to drive.
One would leak oil on to my left foot when I made a turn.  This was of course when I was dressed and going somewhere important.  EEEK.
One had a habit of stopping while i was in the middle of a left turn, once or twice with a semi coming at me.
Another one lost its breaks while I was on the way to work.  I had to let it slow down, then select a tree and run into it to stop it.
Then the endless attempts to start these things.  The carburetor cleaner to spray on the butterfly valve held open with a screwdriver....

such an evocative piece.
and wow, that car was a beauty. shame it wouldn't start!

Evokes precisely the feeling of starting an old vehicle! Between the chords and perc. And that frustrated chord at the end... well done. Exactly what original music should be
