Knead Me

By dadboy on January 2, 2026 10:36 pm

This was a very different track/workflow to what I normally make. I generally stick to the M8 as much as possible, with the exception of sampling or playing an external synth or two. This still relied heavily on the M8, but I was using it to sequence the TEO-5/Astrolab 37, where I was recording through my L6 into an iPad and bouncing stems from there. Also unusual for me is the fact that I played/included guitar (prior to figuring out this L6->iPad workflow this was always a challenge for me, and I really didn't enjoy it. This time it was great!), and using vocals. Initially I had just sang, but I thought better of it and decided to use the vocoder on the Astrolab.

It's also a slightly different genre for me as I went a little more bedroom pop than I normally do. I'm hoping as part of weeklybeats to lean more into bedroom pop/shoegaze in addition to my normal ambient/synthwave stuff.

Uplifting Stranger Things vibe (maybe I still have the finale stuck in my head).  Great track and a great start to WB2026!  Can't wait to hear what you cook up all year!  Some tasty synth sound design in this one.

This is fantastic!!

Excellent track. I was pulled in by the melody and then surprised when vocals came in which super elevated this song. I love a song that's chill but also gets me bopping my head.

Such a vibe.  Seems like the workflow landed for sure.

Awesome track; had me bouncing my head the whole time!

Man this is what my Sunday needed. I really like your treatment of the vocals!

Yesssss, that nin closer style beat mixed with an 80s cure vibe, sooooo good. love love love it! Makes me reach for hairspray and start back combing

This is wonderful!! Getting big sliding under cold blankets on a cold night vibes from this.

Got chills when the vocoder came in, lovely stuff heart

Vocoder is soo good, and the melody + chords are incredibly uplifting

Damn I want to remix this. Imagine just your vocals on top and then a super fast 606 juggling with tons of repeats and triplets

Feel free! You have my permission if you want to 🙂

Came out swining on your first week track!!! Amazing man, hauntingly beautiful, love the vocaloids

Wow! Even though you changed up your workflow this is still undeniably a Dad Boy tune.
Lovely synthwave, and that vocoder is just soo silky smooth heart

This is so cool. This is the kind of music I really enjoy listening to in the night

Very cool, man!
Like Dustsucker mentioned, it's really cool that even though you changed up your workflow, it sounds like you!

Everyone's saying uplifting, but I'm hearing that perfect blend of happy/sad. Like a blend of hope and anxiety for the future, but maybe I'm projecting. lol

Thanks! I think you hit it spot on! The music definitely is a little happier sounding, but the lyrics (maybe intentionally obscured by the vocoder? I don't know lol) are a lot more melancholy.

ooh yais love the intro and gave me some depeche mode feels. impossible not to nod along and enjoy that synth line with the vox.  excellent song!

I always love the sounds in your music. This is no exception.

It makes me fly

Oh man, really had to look for the guitars here. They're pretty well hidden.
Very pretty song overall though.

Thanks buddy, you're one of the best friends I've made so far in all of this stuff, so it's fitting and appreciated that you'd be my first comment on my first WB track heart. Looking forward to keeping this up with you this year!

Ooooh, you're right—that does sound like Closer! I'm a huge NIN fan but I completely missed that. Thanks for the kind comment!

good job. hope you don't leave synthwave completely behind - can never get enough of it

I started listening and said, "this is alright". Then the vocoder came in and I peed myself. This is a splendid vibe!

Hi all, sorry for the late responses - still trying to figure everything out! I really appreciate all your comments, feedback, and encouragement.

Thanks! Yeah I normally am a little too intimidated to do much with vocals, but I was really pleased with how this came out.

Thanks! I'm really excited to expand how I do things this year. I don't know why I have such a hard time doing it normally, but this has definitely made it easier for me to try new things over the last two weeks already. I have a bunch of other ideas I'm saving to come back to in future weeks.

Thanks! Yeah I definitely want to do more with the vocoder. I've had one for a while, but this was the first time I did anything other than goof around with it.

Thanks, good buddy. Hope you're having a good time at MAGfest. We should collaborate on a song this year!

Thanks! Yeah I definitely am eager to work on how I record/mix guitars. This is by far my best attempt, so I'm pretty pleased, but always look to improve.

Haha, thank you!

Oh yeah man this is good. I can hear space for a vocal line in this intro. Love the visuals you put together for the video. I remember hearing this one on the group call I think?? YES vocodery vocals! Yeeee definitely enjoyed this one in the group call. Great poppy synthwave jam.

At 1:04, the arrangement shift made me expect a vocal. When no vocal was I heard, I was a little disappointed, only to very pleasantly surprised by the excellent, dreamy vocoder song melody starting in the second bar of the section! The guitar is processed and mixed in a way that blends seamlessly with the synths.
