Thanks for Your Time

Traveling this week and wasn’t able to find time to make something. This is a phone recording from just before I left with a song written quickly, so it is what is is and that’s okay. Tried a couple of takes but this is the first one, which is probably better despite some flubs.

If you live in the states, you may have taken one of these Dept. of Health surveys over the phone as I did the day I wrote this. I was struck by the flat, muted tone of the person asking the questions, juxtaposed with the heaviness of some of the topics (drugs, depression, etc). It was a notably impersonal conversation, though they also mention helpful resources regardless of your answers, which I think is great.

Only a couple of these are questions I was asked. I wondered what other questions might be worth asking. When 80% of the lyrics comes from the same repeated phrase, the song mostly writes itself. Also, does anyone else’s brain just want to write verses and nothing else?

Do you have a bandcamp or something? I'd like to check out more of your music.

+1

and yeah, this is lovely. the voice memo recording feels appropriate for the song, although could be great fleshed out as well.

re: verses... totally! sometimes when i'm writing, a chorus just feels corny or cloying depending on the song. and don't get me started on bridges  wink

Verses-only songs are awesome. Case-in-point: this song. smile

Very interesting concept and beautiful execution. The soft, sparse guitar strums reinforce the intimate atmosphere you'd expect when confronted with the kinds of questions posed by the lyrics. Great work on this one.

this is beautiful. such a cool starting point for a song. love it.

beautiful song and performance! very memorable

Thank you so much for this. I only have a soundcloud, which is mostly for covers over the years but a few originals. I added a link to my profile if you are interested.

Thank you! I am in agreement, sometimes I feel like I am "supposed" to write a chorus or bridge but it just isn't there.

Many thanks, the takes I did after were not as soft/sparse so I'm glad that aspect seems to serve the song well.

Thank you! Yeah, will come back to this someday to see if I like a more "finished" version more.

I find it fascinating how this group of people here on Weekly Beats sometimes converges on similar ideas for the same week. Sometimes it's "let's do Halloween songs in Spring!", and other times it's "let's record lofi songs with our phones". I've heard a few this week!

Much respect for contributing the big three: music, voice, and lyrics. That makes it a song. And this one hits hard! Thanks for your time!

This is a good listen, especially when you're feeling down and need to check in on yourself.
Don't forget, get enough sleep and drink enough water.

i think this casual recording really fits the subject matter - verses only really works here

Too true, I'll go refill my water (and go to bed soon).
