Again Every Day, Every Night

By Cursory on August 30, 2024 5:31 pm

Happy Week 35! Who doesn’t love a I iv ii VI progression? In my weird effects era apparently, running vocals through some pedal sims in Logic - Leslie speaker, fuzz pedal, octave pedal, and “tie dye delay.”  Actually I ran pretty much all of the guitars through the Leslie and most electrics through the delay as well.

Turns out I have no idea how mixing works when everything has wonky effects. Everything gets a bit muddy as parts layer, but then, that usually happens to me anyway >.> I kept feeling like I was missing a part or two and got in a bit of a “more is more” mindset. Eventually, my computer began to revolt against the amount of tracks/effects which I took as a sign to save this song from myself and stop.

Sir, this was an absolute dreamlike experience to listen to. The effects did their job so well. Sometime more can really be more. The whole composition was like a Roxy Music track on a new exotic level. Thank you for this beautiful music.

Great take on the chord prog! Space IS cool, and so’s your songwriting. You took a pretty deep topic and articulated it gracefully. You’ve got an awesome knack for doing that. big_smile

"Night skies may fly past, spellbound and rapt
The beauty of time passed"

oh yes, that's the stuff.
very much digging the T.C.E.

Finding beauty in passing time, and a sense of contentment with mistakes made and opportunities missed, allowing things beyond our control to go wrong... this is some real wisdom right there, and you packaged it very skillfully in a song. Love it.

Nitpick: since you mentioned this, your mixing woes are in part because the vocals are a tad too loud given the effects. EQ-ing down below 90 Hz would also make them fit with the bass better.

That is so kind, I am glad it landed well for you smile Roxy Music is a new one for me, thank you for sharing this.

Thank you! I will try to keep refining/exploring this kind of lyric writing.

I had an internal struggle about "past" and "passed" so close to each other haha. TCE is amazing, we'll see if it keeps up. Thank you!

Thank you, so glad it resonates smile Also YES thank you for this! When writing/recording rough takes with just guitar/vocals, I loved how huge the effected vocals sounded and tried to cling to this despite adding all these other elements that got in the way. Really appreciate your insight here.

Q-Rosh nailed it, it has a dream-like sequence feel to it.  Like I was sipping a drink with a lil umbrella on a floaty in a pool but passed out and dreamt of traveling thru space in a winnebago. (I've watched spaceballs too many times).  That "night skies may fly past, spellbound and rapt" line is awesome.  I've been on my own space kick lately too, keep on spacin! smile

I mean this in the best possible way but while I was listening to this I suddenly flashed back to playing Bioshock and hearing something similar and nostalgic and underwater on a broken radio in some retro-future dystopian bar... and it was kind of an awesome moment.

I dig the effects a lot. But I was also craving just a brief moment of clarity - have those vocals become crystal clear if only for a moment - just to give the story that little glimpse of clarity, a perfect memory to take away from the depths.

That is a lovely image, thanks so much! You and jwh both pointing out that line gives me the warm and fuzzies smile

I've somehow missed out on Bioshock but am somewhat familiar, this absolutely feels like a compliment! I appreciate your comment about wanting that moment of clarity - I really like the idea of backing off the effects at around 2:50 for the last little verse.
