Summer Sensation (m8)

By cTrix on January 7, 2024 3:51 pm

Hiiiii!  Back (for now) for 2024 to see what happens.  A bit of cheeky tek / house to start the year.  Made on the M8 as an intro to an existing techno set I played last week - so I decided to dump this one into a full track.  First time using M8 render feature and I'm not sure how I feel about it.  I usually just do manual takes and everything is a bit outta phase and wonky - where this is way too sample accurate in my normal world :-P

Mixed with headphones in Reaper on a laptop with minimal plugins.  Which is a shame because I'd normally put tape sims and saturation on tunes like these.  I think it still kinda holds tho?

This year for me is about just making something in a week - and given it's almost 2am and I only spent a couple of hours, it'll do the job.  On the flip side, I had a great weekend hanging with Aday and other WB / M8 crew; no one worked on tunes, but we had a great time playing Artemis until 3am.  Hope everyone had a good first week.

Fire!

Banga!

Hell yeah coolTrix. Absolute banger.

This bangs!

absolutely wicked

Woah the drop 1min mark - biggggg

bangin bass

Love the swinging vibes to your rhythms as always. Fun track. Bouncy and screwy in a good way

oops i posted 3 fire emojis big_smile

he rly doesn't miss yikes goes so damn hard when it opens up into the 4x4 beat

Hell of a tune as always, hope to hear more this year

that main riff still is a hella earworm banger even given how sparse and minimal it is.  2024 let's goooooo

Fucking love you. goddamn. So much great movement and swing in here. Love that deep, crawling bass.

I really feel you on the "don't over think it" vibration. I've learned so much by just doing and letting go. A few tracks from my last time around I was bouncing directly from m8 and uploading with my phone, with no post-mix, from an airport haha. Horrifying. But way more learnings than I feel I would have if I kept things super close to the chest. Not everything is a banger but you might find something in the sketch. Which is always better than the opposite. Wish you all the right energies for 24.

But this is a banger haha.

Nice jam, like the congas!

FIYAH indeed!

yes deep bass big_smile big_smile big_smile

This got me groovin

Oh cool I didn't know you were doing this!
I'm not so much into house but this one just works, great tune!

dang this one is insane

Breakbeat heart

that cTrix swing big_smile

Bumpin this at work. That bass is creamy as fuck.

plenty has been said about the bangin’ bass but I love that steppy little lead

The rhythm element that starts coming in at 2:15 is prettyyy cool. And yes loving the congas + steppy lead!

rhythm section on point. Love the synth melody. Way to go!

Blippy lead is where it's at. Nice pacing as well.

I remember how I only learned about you because of insanely good music between talks at some virtual Python conference a few years back. I asked the organizers what that was because it was just awesome. And it turned out you were on the audio team. I'm a fan ever since!

Awesome to see you around these parts. The track this week is a departure from the chiptune sound only to an extent! The lead is chiptuney enough and I like how it slightly evolves across the track.

Really really hyped to see you back for another round, cTrix!!

Although you say the track is thrown almost "on the go", it sounds quite quite rounded and well balanced to me. BTW the "Fire" sample is priceless...

Groovy summer vibes for our northern hemisphere winter smile

clean mix sounds great! I could see how you might want to add tape saturation to it, but it sounds very cohesive without it

fun beat drop

Ooooh that's a nice beat to start 2024. Groove, and a lot of personality. These off beat plic ploc sounds are a wonderful touch!

jesus. instant stankface at the drop.

Yep. release this one!!

This is perfect -38C weather music

Solid sound design and solid groove timing between the lead, bass and kicks. Feels very locked in. Congas are also underated in house jams.

you are so good at music, it's really inspirational.
so grateful you are back!

Ayyyyy!  Thanks Orange Drink!  There's some peeps on WB I kinda feel are like fam, just because they've been with me the whole way - thanks for being one of those peeps *big hug*

I love my Conga / Djembe / Aux percussion collection!  Interestingly we just added a percussionist to the funk band I play drums in and it make SO MUCH difference!

MINUS WHATT??!!  It never gets under about 5+ degrees here - and that's at night!  Plz don't freeze!

If it were -38c here I'd run fluid lines from my CPU / Graphics card to my balcony and back for cooling :-P

I've thought about reworking it into something a bit more substantial!  I do like the vibe of this one.

It's very cheeky!  Compressor settings needed to be pretty tight.

I'm all about the plic-plox

That is the correct dancing style for this tune!  How did you know?!

Yeah, just run it a bit dirty for the tops on the bass line.  Pickup a few extra harmonics on the low end too.  I'd love to run it though an old Ampex mic stage.  (like this one   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mKoiUjBZ1I&t=200s  )

Hahaha, yeah, it's from an old Coldcut samples CD I bought as a kid!  I came across it in a music store bargain bin for $10. I lost the disc for years but found it double-stacked in an old CDROM box recently.  I'm only just getting to use it now.

Ahhh ha - there we go!  Yup, was defs on the stream team.  We needed a bunch of background tunes so I just assembled a play list of all my old WB stuff for the 2020 stream.  Glad you enjoyed them :-)

It's one big clump of mono-sonic chaos really!

Always shuffles.  Designed for head nodding.

That's a chopped up breakdown from an old techno record sliced into a random order and heavily pass filtered.

Nullsleep wrote:

It was a bit of an experiment to how many octaves of harmonics I could I stack and still have it be cohesive.  I think it ends up as 4 tracks worth!

Interestingly people into house would probably say it's too varied / too much going on for them.  I listen to way too much progressive rock and jazz fusion to be able to make straight up house without a few silly adventures.  Glad you were able to listen to this one.

Tuned conga's are fun to work with.

Cheers Sam!  Yeah, I think there is a lot of truth to this.  I didn't even think about the fact I'd be able to bounce to a master directly on the M8 and pop an SD reader in my phone.  Mmm.  Might have to try this one week.  How do you make it an MP3 on the phone tho?  Or do you just record it into the phone?  I suppose there would be sites I could encode it with.

Yeah, I had it stuck on my head for days even tho I threw it together last minute before a set.

Yeah, that 4/4 part is a cheeky "leeeets go" moment... but the inner yabs in me made it drop back to a broken kick again

Haha, yeah, I'm trying to do the same.  Doesn't work hey.  TRASH80 WHERE THE EMOJI SUPPORT?! :-P

spOOked wrote:

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks it's a bit screwy!  Certainly a wonky ol' wobbler
