Erhu and Vocalization experiment

By Crash Overture on May 17, 2026 5:06 pm

Back from holiday came back feeling pretty revitalized. I discovered after I left Iceland that they have their variant of a fiddle, and I will need to get one sometime.  I realized I can't take my Ipad out of airplane mode yet, because I had a show downloaded I want to watch. So no garageband, and I was not doing that on my phone.

Used my phone to record and played with my erhu (the one I got back in February) while vocalizing and then cut it up, slowed it down, layered shit, played with effects, and made this little thing. I do not play ehru well,(still learning)  so it's an open D and A with a bunch a noise because singing and playing is something I can't do. But whatever, it was fun and I learned a few things. Also didn't realize I create a high pitch noise sometimes with the erhu during recording which I have no idea how to fix, but now I know and can figure it out. So something to work on while playing and recording.

This sounds really cool, there's a drone element here that is working beautifully with the vocalization ... really haunting. Definitely worth chasing down a rabbit hole.

YES
i'd love to experiment with an erhu someday. sounds very cool with your vocal.
also, Iceland!

This is super cool - a little spooky, but very captivating. I wonder how it would sound if you doubled the layers (so many more performances) and spread them around the stereo spectrum, maybe with a little reverb. Probably also double the recording noise, but...I think that would sound epic

I'll have to give it a go. It's a good idea. I did play a bit with reverb, but it wasn't working as I planned. So I have a little research to do.

thank you! I need to spend more time with it and Iceland. Both require more time.

It's like some mysterious healing ritual.

Love it.
