Vitamin Variant

I cranked out an instrumental this week.  Mostly synth driven, with a touch of cello and musical saw.  I played around with adding some distortion to the bass and even a little on the saw to give it a kind of nasty sound.

In other news I just got invited to play a 25 to 30 minute set on May 24th at a local bar.  It sounds fun, but holy cow, I'm way out of practice when it comes to the live performance side of music!  It seems like it's going to be a stripped down unplugged/acoustic sort of affair, so I'll have to figure out some songs that fit that setting.  Luckily, after doing several years of WB, I've got a lot of material to choose from.  Now I just need to pick which songs I want to do and learn how to play them in the next month.  I guess I'd better get practicing!

Just downloaded this.  It's really great.  That piano meanders in just the right way.  This is my favorite of yours that you've done all year, and I generally like you stuff.  This one is really unassuming, and just solid.

this has the perfect amount of "wonk"

congrats on the gig!  film it!

Thanks!  Glad to hear you liked this one.  I weirdly wasn't sure about it when I first did it, but then it started growing on me.

Finding that right level of wonk can be a challenging but rewarding task.  Thanks! I probably should film the gig, but I don't know if I can stand watching myself.  smile

P.S. I'm thinking about working up a version of Frost Giant Wake Up Service from WB 2022 as one of the songs.  Your nice comments about it have inspired me to embrace it.

Open the show with that!!!

Oh man, this is wicked! I'm smiling smile

I like this instrumental track. The best sound in in here is the cello line. It sounds like a combo of brass players, like on an 70ies Afro beat/ reggae dub record. It sounds very roots music like and it inspires me to tune my cello and try something similar.
Oh yes, I want to see the gig too. It would be great if you could post it here.

Lots of fun sounds in the track, good to get real recordings with the synth. Is the "huhuhuhu" a human vocal sound?  That track's quite a trip!

Still playing with a potential setlist and thinking about flow, but will definitely consider it!

I can totally see that.  You should definitely bust out your cello.  I'll see about filming/posting the gig.

That sound is a synth, but it's one that simulates a vocoder.

like od said, right about of "wonk". Really keeps it interesting. Really cool song, favorited!

Love the sound and panning on the cello.  It sounds great in the mix alongside the saw and drums.  Wonderful wonkiness to be had for sure!

that distorted saw is WILD! nice one, CC heart

oh how exciting - i hope you have a wonderful show!

this track is very fun & nutritious

When the wonk is called for, one has to deliver it.  smile

Sometimes a cello is just the right counterpoint to some wonky sounds.

It began as mere curiosity over what it might sound like to add some distortion to the saw, and then I discovered it sounded delightfully gross.

Thanks!  I'm both nervous and excited for the show.  I'm just going to try to go have some fun with it.

The happenings are mysterious down at the local bar where this band is playing. Great various sounds happening. Congrats on gig - I hope you do film and share back here, since we can't go see it! Learning ones own songs always seems odd, but that's what has to happen to play live.

It's true.  Just because I write and record a song doesn't mean I know how to play it.  Plus, it's different when it's just me and a guitar.
