Usurper

By Cosmic Cairns on March 6, 2024 7:41 pm

This one didn't really start out as a song so much, per se.  I was really just messing around trying to make a racket, piling a bunch of guitars on each other.  Then thought should I throw some fuzz on the drums and bass, too?  Sure, why not?  I thought it ended up with a sort of shambolic charm to it so I decided to add some vocals.  When it came to the lyrics I started thinking about power and the types of people who crave it.  I'm not really sure what's so great about it at the end of the day and I also think going after it means you have to sacrifice some things I think are pretty important in life, like basic human connection.  But I guess there must be some thrill to ordering people around and buying private islands and throwing money at all your problems.  What do I know?

Sociopath stole the throne
Now he's standing all alone
Acts as if life is cheap
Ruler of garbage heaps
Ran this place into the ground
Wonders why no one's around

This usurper went to town
Got mistaken for a clown
No one bowed or bent the knee
Acknowledged his supremacy
"I'm the king!" he screams and shouts
Goes back home, sits and pouts

Some people have a need for power
Hoard all the wealth and sit in their towers
Where's this need come from?  I don't know
Warped and perverted and raging egos
Maybe these fools have never known love
Still think they're ordained by heaven above

Kingdoms come, kingdoms go
Kings often get overthrown
They've got no divine rights
Not spotlit by heaven's lights
This usurper cried and cried
Til he just got old and died

Cosmic Cairns going for fast paced space rock! The guitar walls, synth, blast beats, and super relaxed vocals get us to critical velocity to leave earth and fly through space. I also liked the section with the lyrics passed in a Radio like EQ. Loved that track.

The overall sound of this came together really nicely. Sometimes a wild experiment like "Fuzz. on. EVERYTHING." yields wildly cool results!

Great lyrics, actually hitting the nail of what is going on in the world. Love this. The guitars are fuzzy like hell and the drummer is a cool animal. Well done, sir.

Loving the sound of this, and the general wildness. I wanna move! Yes to all the fuzz. Great lyrics. I like the kind of spoken part, nice contrast. Damn usurper, gotta go. Overthrow.

hell yes

The contrasting tempos are perfectly unhinged. Great track

Loving the fuzz, though it's a mighty force that very easily takes over the mix if not wielded with caution.

It's certainly fun to blast off once in a while.  Earth can get boring sometimes.  smile

Thanks!  I do think WB is a good opportunity to just try out some crazy stuff sometimes, throw everything at the wall, and see what sticks.  Maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised.  And if it fails completely, there's always next week and at least you probably end up learning something in the process.

Thanks!  I was pretty happy with how the lyrics turned out on this one.  And it was fun making the music, too.

The whole concept of power kind of rubs me the wrong way.  Let's overthrow all of 'em.

Thanks!  It was indeed a bit of an unhinged experience putting it together.  But fun!

I probably won't go quite so fuzz crazy most of the time, but it's kind of fun to push things too far once in a while.

Another winner!  Great wall-of-sound attack, but melodic nevertheless. I also dig the lyrics. The electronic additions here and there gave a nice flavour and are well placed in the song. Great stuff!

Thanks!  It's fun to do the wall of sound thing once in a while for sure.

Great song and the love the production. Everything is so dense and crunchy. Love it smile

so great - this racket really taps into the zeitgeist

PUNK. ROCK. This is like a carnival ride through a tunnel of love gone mad!  The vocal is so steady through the frenzy and then the lofi radio rap really punctuates it. Lots of cool sounds and textures.

Woah! This is wicked and epic!

Sometimes it just feels good to make a racket.

Thanks!  There's certainly something to be said for the punk rock ethos.  Also I like the image of the carnival ride gone mad.

Thanks!  It was fun to do this one.

Love the lyrics and complex rhythm grooves playing off each other.  From the guitars to the hi-energy breaks.  We feel that racket! smile
