The Same But Different

By Cosmic Cairns on January 13, 2022 8:04 pm

I've had my current phone for the last 5 or possibly 6 years because a) I'm cheap and b) I resent how they try to force you to buy a new expensive phone every couple years.  It's somehow held up pretty well all this time, but there are definitely some signs it's on its last legs.

I've also been using it as a sort of audio sketchbook for the last several years.  If a song idea occurs to me while I'm out and about I'll hum it into the phone so I don't forget it.  Or if I encounter some sort of weird or interesting sound out in the wild I'll use it as a field recorder to get a sample of it.  I've got a decent number of song ideas and sounds on there I haven't used yet, so one of my goals for this year is to try to use as many of them as possible before I'm forced to give in and get a new phone.

I'm keeping things pretty simple and minimalistic this week, so all I did was used a beat, played a bassline, and put a sound sample on top.  I had a pretty low-key New Years Eve this year, but going through my phone recordings I discovered I had made about a 2 minute recording from a NYE party I was at a few years ago.  So there's a bunch of people talking and some of those cheap horn things they pass out can be heard more or less throughout.

Another week down!  50 more of these to go?  We've got this!

This is surprisingly hypnotic. Love the idea of using all your past ideas and audio samples. Feel like it's a good recipe for happy accidents.

This is wild man, it sounds so chaotic.  Looking forward to hearing all the ideas from your phone hashed out!

As I was listening to the track, I was wondering what this horn like thing was. Like a baby elephant complaining loudly. This now makes sense. I love the concept, using field recording of weird situations, which sound alien without context. The bass makes it even more surreal.

Very cool bass track. Like drums and sampling as well. One bit of it really sounds like a saxophone, this is super fun.

Thanks.  If nothing else there ought to be a few things worth salvaging from the old audio sketchbook.

A lot of them will definitely need some fleshing out, but going back through and listening there are some little melodic snippets I like.

There is something interesting in hearing sounds outside their normal context and that seems worth exploring a bit.

I thought the New Years Horns occasionally gave this a bit of a free jazz feel or something.  Totally on accident, but a fun surprise for me.

This must have been a cool party. Your bassline gives a good drive to the scenery. Do you know the "Fan Man"? (a very nice book) He used to record every step he took... a bit like you with the phone.

This paints a picture! Great combination of elements to bring on a chaotic late hour party mood. The bass line is essential. Cool stuff!

I'm not familiar with Fan Man, but it sounds interesting.  I'll have to check it out.

Thanks.  I knew going into this that I wanted just a bass line and party sounds.  I didn't know what the bass line was going to be until I actually sat down and played it.

Catchy bassline and really cool use of the NYE party sounds.  The bassline sorta reminded me of Chemical Brothers' "Block Rockin Beats" or the original bassline they sampled from The Crusaders' "The Well's Gone Dry".  I think the NYE horns gave it that jazzy feeling too.  Nice work!

I'm actually not familiar with either of those tracks you mentioned.  I'll have to go check them out.  Thanks!

Wild things are afoot in the background here. Great idea to use the recordings! Feels like the inside of my head on some days. But that's a tasty bassline I could groove to all day long, yes yes.

This bassline is stuck in my head. Can I sample that??

Yeah of course!  Sample away.   Can't wait to hear what you do with it.

HA the NYE party sample is awesome.  back up those audio notes, even if you don't get a new phone right away!

nice party jam while people freak out at the same party

Yeah, it really would just be the smart thing to back them all up.  I've had phones just die suddenly in the past.  It's mostly just laziness on my part.

Groovy bass line. Lots of texture from the layers of audio insanity.  Gibby Haynes Butthole Surfers vibe.

The cool thing about recording a party is there are a lot of different sound sources all around.  It's chaotic but offers a rich textural pallet for sure.  Always fun to get a Butthole Surfers comparison!

I'm not the only weirdo who hums into his phone to remember ideas? Thank you for making me feel normal. I like how you  combine the recording with the music.

LOL!  Yeah, I try to at least kind of get off somewhere on my own so I hopefully don't look like too big of a weirdo.  But the ability to record like that is the best part of cell phones as far as I'm concerned.  I don't know how many song ideas I lost in the old days because I couldn't remember them later.

This is wild! I dig it
