The Orlop

By Cosmic Cairns on September 4, 2024 7:12 pm

I read a book recently that referenced the infamous failed Franklin expedition of 1845 to try to find the Northwest Passage through the Arctic.  This reminded me of how much I had enjoyed/been traumatized by Dan Simmons' book The Terror, when I read it a few years ago.  It's a fictionalized version of the real life expedition that explores all the horrors of being trapped in a hostile frozen environment with dwindling supplies, and then also throws in a monster to make things even worse.

Anyway, the orlop is a term that came up in both books.  It's an interesting sounding word all on its own, but specifically it refers to one of the lowest decks on a ship, frequently used for storage and is often completely dark (like pitch black) and freezing cold.  I just sort of kept that image in my mind when I came up with this track.

In the darkest depths of the ship's interior
Boards creak and moan below the waterline

As the arctic seas swallow us entirely
I'm huddled up behind some cabling

The orlop's cold, all the hatches have iced over
I'm feeling sleep coming over me

The theme of the books you mention also reminds me of At the Mountains of Madness by Lovecraft. Talk about expeditions in the deep artic cold, and mix that with old ones horrors and other shoggoths.

That track is cinematic. That lead synth is really cool, evolves organically and sounds great. The bip reminds me of a heart beat. I like how you did a long intro and then started singing on it, it all worked out very well.

oh wow, what a cool vibe you have tapped into here. tHE ORLOP! that is an interesting word, and i love how you let that guide you.
one of my favorite Cosmic Cairns tracks so far this year!

Learning so much from you. Now it is the Orlop. Your singing is excellent. The extended synth experiments at the end could last a bit longer for my taste. Have a beautiful week.

this was super inspiring, the track feels perfect for the concept, now adding the Orlop to my list of places I never want to visit

This is great. I feel cold after ready you description and lyrics ... yikes. Old ships like that sound rough. Especially with monsters around. The synths add the chill. This drives along chillingly. Vocals sound great, nice harmonies. Bassline is sweet. One of my faves of yours this year as well.

Word of the day is orlop, love your story craft is this one.

what a vibe! Your vocal work and lyric writing are inspiring. Maybe I should release a song with vocals this year. Well done!

the strings really create that sailing the open sea vibe.  Really cool synth breakdown towards the end. \m/  I enjoyed the Terror tv show when it came out smile

this track leaves me wondering if cosmic cairns is thinking about frozen expiditions because it's still brutally hot out west?

we got another headwave here with a bit less humidity but still no good for growing fall crops sad

I read that Lovecraft story a long time ago.  Something about the Arctic lends itself well to horror.  The Thing comes to mind as well.

Thanks!  I like the vibe of this one, too.

Maybe I'll have to go back and do an extended version of this sometime.  Thanks for listening!

It really doesn't sound appealing at all to spend time in the orlop.  But it was fun to imagine it through music.

I really can't imagine spending months or years at a time on one of those old ships.  Especially stuck in the arctic ice.  It's amazing what conditions people will put up with though.  Thanks for listening!

You should totally go for it!  Vocals can be challenging, but they do add a different dimension.  And there's nothing to lose really.

I watched the show shortly after reading the book.  I enjoyed it, but they definitely changed a lot of stuff.  If you like reading at all, the book is definitely worth checking out.

There's probably indeed some truth to that.  I do believe there's something to thinking about the cold when it's hot outside.
