Teleportation

By Cosmic Cairns on June 12, 2026 7:42 pm

My wife and I have often talked over the years how nice it would be if teleportation existed.  We have friends and family scattered around all over the place and it's difficult to see a lot of them very often.  But if you could just instantly drop in anywhere just to meet up for lunch or to hang out on a Friday night... that would be super cool.

I finally busted out my cello for the first time this year for this track.  I've been wanting to use it for a while now, but early in the year my wife started a reorganizing project that piled a bunch of stuff in front of it and made it hard to access.  Unfortunately she hasn't been able to focus on the project much because she's been having to do a lot for her parents who are in their 80's and who we are transferring into an assisted living facility.  I finally decided to just move some stuff out of the way and get to my cello, so hopefully it'll be making some more regular appearances.  I can use my musical saw now, too, because I needed the cello bow to play it.

Also my dog George (one of the cairn terriers I got my name from) makes an appearance on this.  He pretty much always hangs out with me while I record and usually he stays chilled out, but this week he decided to start barking when I was about to do a vocal take.  I took it as he wanted to make a vocal cameo, so he shows up at the end of the song.

Greetings from a continent away
I wish I could laugh with you today
Hope that you believe me when I say
That I'm always working on a way

Measuring angles of shadows and the sun
I'm charting the movements of the night skies
Unlocking secrets of teleportation
And soon you'll be in for a surprise

I blinked my eyes and now I'm very sure
I'm not where I was just seconds before
I don't know what fate may have in store
Walking up the pathway to your door

Would you care to join me as I traverse the globe
And we could go anywhere at all now
Step through a portal and zap instantly away to
Somewhere that's not here anyhow

Very nice positive track. I like especially the dog in there, just teeing the track in a perfect way.

love the cello! a great compliment to this delightful romp
please give George a pat & tell him he nailed his part   big_smile

Lovely. The smorgasbord of live instruments suits the vibe perfectly. The little instrumental interlude motif is super catchy too.

The movement in rhyme scheme is interesting AAAA | ABAB | AAAA| ABXA

in theory it looks like its going somewhere and keeping things fresh but it started to feel a bit long the second time around. With the way the second AAAA kinda builds tension by repeating the same thing might've been cool to lean into that with the music and have tension build there and/or deliver those lines at double cadence. The first three lines there really feel like they are pulling me into the uncertainty of the journey but the last line "walking up to your door" felt a bit flat compared to the previous three. Might've been cool to amp up the tension more with the last line and resolve it in the next section but at this point I've taken some serious liberties lol enjoy my armchair analysis

So sweet, love all the live instruments. They bring a ton of character and energy, as does the George cameo at the end.

Really feel you with the lyrics, I've moved to the other side of the country for work, away from friends and family. We always have to plan in advance to go and see them. It's not the other side of the continent, but far enough to not be able to randomly drop by their house for a small visit. Kinda miss that from my youth. Anyway, thanks for capturing that feeling in a song heart
