S'mores Wars

This was basically a pure sonic experiment for me.  I had no clue how the final result was going to turn out, but I think it ended up pretty cool.  I started by intentionally degrading the sound by recording it a couple times through my phone and then microphone and then as the track progressed I added layers by multi-tracking and looping the same part and laying down some bass and synths.  To mess with the sound a little more I occasionally would add some extreme flange or chorus effect for a few seconds at a time randomly to some of the tracks.  I also intentionally included some snippets of feedback created by pointing the microphone right at the monitors as the entire track played back.

It's a beautiful cross between noise, art, and music. I dig it.  It's strange because when I started WB in 2014, I would probably have clicked past this, but my interests have obviously expanded.

  Hey thanks!  In all honesty it's something I might have skipped back in the day, too.  I have dabbled with noise experiments in the past, but I've never made anything quite like this.  WeeklyBeats is certainly inspiring and mind expanding.

Woah I thought one of my live NIN albums randomly came on with that gritty intro smile I could see this in a movie like Heat where they used Eno's Force Marker.  I like how the chaos gives ways to sunshine with the arps at the end.  Nice job!

Very cool experiment. I'm a sucker for distortion and feedback. I like how this slowly works towards crystal clean synths. Nice!

  Thanks!  I didn't think of it as movie music, but now that you mention it I can see that.

  Yeah, I need to play around with some more distortion and feedback.  It's fun!  I did feel like it needed to go to the synths at the end as a bit of a palette cleanser from the noise.  Plus, they'd been kind of buried in the mix all along and I thought it would be cool to spotlight them on their own.

Yeah I like the progression from noise to clean track. It starts like a nightmare and close like a beautifull dream. We usually hear the other way around, so that was a nice change!

I listened while commuting... First i thought i should listen at home where it's more quiet...
Than i realised that your sounds with the people around me was tampering with my emotions... so i just listened and watched the people around me. First i felt slightly agressive than i felt a little haunted or stressed like the white rabbit from alice
and than there was the release... like a dream... big_smile

Really a pretty cool result considering a cellphone was involved. You managed to build up something very intense. You have my permission for more experiments.

Cool work, really creative ideas to get these sounds, well done. Love the beat that comes in and builds up and Like the transition to sweetness too. Yes to more experiments.

It hangs together because of the constant rhythmic element and builds tension then releases it at the end. It is like riding an Italian motorcycle on a crust cold morning down through the twisties at speed. Flicking from side to side nearly dragging a peg but not quite with only the sound of the motor and the wind until finally you get to the flatlands. Something you do every morning.

  Yeah, stuff does seem to go the other direction a lot, doesn't it?  I just felt like a little changeup was necessary to give it a little more dimension.

  Thanks for sharing the story of your commute.  I could see this track building some aggression.  Good thing there's the release at the end!

  I'm coming more and more around to the usage of cell phones in recordings.  They make handy field recorders when you want to capture a sound when you're out in public somewhere and they can also alter the sound quality of something you've recorded in occasionally interesting ways.

  Yeah, part of my goal this year is to push myself out of my comfort zones.  Maybe not every single week, but sometimes.

Thanks for listening and sharing your impressions.  That's some vivid imagery I can totally picture.  I agree the rhythmic element really helps this out.  At first I was just playing with the noise loops, but I felt the drum and bass really made it "work."

Crazy stuff... Yep movie music... Descent into madness, chaos, timelapse of city, people flying past, close up of face, eyes scattered left to right, drugs, sex, doof doof, nudity, mayhem, matrix, mystic, falling... . . . . .. . . . .. GOOD!

A wonderful journey from the noisy labyrinths up into the clear sky. No need to stop experimenting!
